Marcella Ann Baker went peacefully into the loving arms of Jesus on July 28, 2024. Known to her family for being the most caring Mother and Grandmother, she was born on March 13, 1939 to Leroy and Agnes (Vasicek) Mechura in Industry, TX. Marcella married Billy W. Baker on May 1, 1954 in Houston, TX. A simple family outing to a dance led Billy and Marcella to meet, and that night, Billy went to his mother and told her he met the girl he was going to marry. They happily celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary this year. Their love grew deeper over the years and they still held hands until the very end. In their love for each other, surrounded by their love for God, they created a large, close-knit family, and she became affectionately known as Memaw to her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Our family gatherings always started with a Thanksgiving prayer to God before we ate our meal - usually led by Memaw. She never once complained about anything in life and never had a bad thing to say about anybody. Anyone who met her instantly loved her. A longtime volunteer at NAM and her church, she also enjoyed participating in her local gardening club, and was a pretty stellar golfer as well. She was also a member of the Catholic Daughters of America.
Memaw had a peace about her that could instantly calm you. She made your bad day better. Her hugs made you feel loved. Her smile made you smile. When she said, “I love you,” you could truly feel it. She loved to see all of the kids over the years in every sport, graduation, or any other event. She cared for her family immensely and spending time with God was something she did every day. Her faith was unshakable, even in her times of suffering. She led her life as a servant of God, and we have no doubt our Father is proud of her and is so happy to have her home.
Our legacy we leave behind is not the year of our birth or date of our heavenly entrance, but it is the (dash) that is in between. It is how we lived while on earth and oh, how our sweet Memaw lived. She lived her life to the fullest. Her “dash” is filled with countless memories, an unwavering faith, unconditional love she showed and a servant’s heart made of pure gold. She was one of the best listeners and she always cared about what was going on in your life. She is so many things that we will miss, but she is in so many things that we will treasure. For she is far more precious than rubies (Proverbs 3:15). Marcella is preceded in death by her parents, brother Alois, sister-in-law Docia and her son-in-law Dale. She leaves behind her loving husband Billy of 70 years, four children: Debbie Davis (Mark), Karen Pope (Gary), Robert Baker and Jennifer Couch, 8 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren, 3 half-sisters and 1 half brother.
2 Timothy 4:7-8 I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. Henceforth there is laid up for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, will award to me on that Day, and not only to me but also to all who have loved his appearing.
We are so grateful that God allowed us to have our Mom and our Memaw with us for 85 years.
Memaw, you have won your battle and you are completely healed. You are now resting, covered by His wings, living the life you were always meant to live. Save us all a seat because we can’t wait until we see you again.
Love,
Your Family, who miss you dearly
