Margie Faye Barfield Johnson, 96, entered into the presence of her Lord and Savior on December 26, 2024, in Manchaca, TX, at her home where she lived with her daughter, Kathy and son in law, Rex. After living a long and blessed life, she was called home to Heaven where she will experience complete healing and great rejoicing.
Margie, who preferred to be called Marge, was born to EO & Lela Bell Barfield on Dec 8th, 1928, in Vivian, Louisiana. She was the 3rd of 6 children. The family moved to Athens, TX where she grew up and met Herschel Johnson at a ‘Singing’. Herschel sang in a Gospel Quartet. Margie played the accordion. They spent a lot of time enjoying the gift of music.
They became husband and wife in 1950, and were married 58 years before Herschel’s death in 2008. They lived in Athens, TX, Norman and Duncan, OK, then settled in Houston, TX where they lived and worked for over 40 years. They were members of Braeswood Church and Calvary Church, where they both served and worshiped together.
Margie worked in the Henderson County Courthouse in Athens, for Halliburton in Duncan Oklahoma, and ended her working career at the Texas Highways Department in Houston, where she retired after 25 years. She also volunteered at the neighborhood elementary school where she would read to the Kindergartners every Friday.
They had only one child, Kathy, who they raised with as much love and support as humanly possible. In 2009, Margie moved to Austin, to be with Kathy and her husband Rex, and her three beautiful granddaughters and great grandchildren. She lived at Gaines Ranch Brookdale where she enjoyed the crochet club. They made many blankets for preemie babies born at Seton Hospital.
She was a wonderful wife, mother, Meme, friend, and neighbor. She was a great cook and homemaker. Her greatest talent might have been finding the best deals at TJMaxx, where most of the employees knew her by name. Her favorite hobby was listening to Englebert Humperdink, her favorite singing artist. One of her biggest projects was designing and decorating the most extravagant playhouse for Shari, Kara, and Kayci complete with pink shag carpet, Holly Hobby wallpaper, ceiling fan, running water, and closet space for the Cabbage Patch babies.
Margie is survived by her daughter Kathryn Johnson Stewart, son in law Rex Stewart, her grandchildren Shari Stewart Hollemans (Kevin), Kara Stewart Kent (Brandon), and Kayci Stewart Ramos (Iric). She also leaves her six great grandchildren; Keagan Hollemans, Paxton Hollemans, Camren Kent, Garrett Kent, Cassie Ramos, and Araceli Ramos. She is preceded in death by her parents, EO and Lela Bell Barfield, Brothers Rudolph and Melvin Barfield, Sisters Lela Vern Hampton, Lee Gibbs, and Peggy Rich.
She will be missed by her family and all who knew her, yet we are confident she is happy and whole, walking on the streets of gold in her eternal home.
