Margie Lee Saxon Stevens went to be with her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on September 9, 2019. She was born on January 11, 1926 in Meadville, Mississippi to Guy and Agnes Saxon, and there lead a happy childhood as the "baby" of six children. On April 16, 1943, the day she graduated High School, Margie married the love of her life Eddie Stevens of Galveston, Texas.
They set out the next morning on a bus headed for Texas to begin their life together, and what a life it turned out to be! Eddie had been signed by the Brooklyn Dodgers shortly before their marriage and played minor league with their organizations until being called up to the majors by the Dodgers at the age of 21 in 1946. Margie followed him all over the country as he pursued his lifelong dream of a career in professional baseball and shared many great stories through the years about the highs and lows of being a "baseball wife." When Eddie's playing days ended in 1958, he became a talent scout for the Minnesota Twins- having the territory of Texas, New Mexico and Louisiana. Margie was finally able to set down roots in Houston to raise their three daughters. She had the gift of hospitality and their home became a popular spot for friends and family to stop by for coffee and homemade "goodies". She was a loving wife and mother and a devoting Baptist, always drawing much strength during difficult times from her faith in Jesus Christ. That faith would sustain her through many losses and challenges in the course of her life, with each one leaving her stronger.
Following the death of her husband in 2012, after 69 1/2 years of marriage, Margie moved to Bellville, Texas to live with her youngest daughter Vicki and son-in-law, Jim Porter. She embraced her new surroundings and made many friends in the small community, especially at First Baptist Bellville. She will be greatly missed by all. She was "Nanny" to six grandchildren and "Super Nanny" to 16 Grandchildren and 4 great, great grandchildren!
Margie was preceded in death by her beloved husband, her parents, 4 brothers, 1 sister, 2 daughters and 2 son-in-laws. She often talked about the great reunion she had waiting for her in heaven and she is now rejoicing and whole again.
