Maria Luisa was born and raised in Laredo, Texas. Mom’s formative years gave her a profound sense of American patriotism. She had her heart in America but had deep respect for the Mexican culture where her family came from and both cultures were celebrated in Laredo, the Gateway to Mexico! Mom moved to Houston in 1957 to raise her family.
Maria Luisa taught her daughters to speak Spanish. Three out of four of us still speak Spanish! Mom made sure that we connected with our cousins in Laredo and sent us to “Cousins Camp” every summer at our grandma’s house in Laredo and then on the ranch in Encinal. Mom made sure that her daughters develop deep connections with her family, a connection that is still thriving today.
Maria Luisa married the love of her life, Alberto Adame, on July 4th, 1968.
Mom loved to celebrate holidays and birthdays. But her favorite holiday was Christmas! She loved the decorations, the music, the family fun, the presents, driving around to look at lit up houses! It gave her great joy to come home to her own lit up house!
Mom’s career was as a banker. That was her bread and butter. Her passion was serving others especially through the Church. She was baptized in the Rio Grande as a child. She was a woman of deep and abiding faith and she lived long enough to evolve into a grace-filled loving Christian. I know she is rejoicing in heaven, is reunited with her Honey, Alberto, and all her loved ones.
To describe this unforgettable woman is difficult! Maria Luisa meant so much to so many! Mom was a Leader, she was Strong, she was Fearless and most of all she was Bold!
Her arms wrapped this family in so much love that our cups overflow. She referred to her sons-in-law simply as Sons! She loved to sing! She loved to dance! Mom was the most incredible human God ever created. She will be missed but in the hearts of her daughters, sons, grandchildren and the people closest to her we will carry her memory with care and love.
Thank you, Mom, for giving us the gift of life, the gift of love, and the gift of family. You will be profoundly missed and perpetually celebrated! We will see you in every sunrise, every sunset, every cloud in the sky, every tree and flower you will be there. We will miss your kisses and hugs. We will miss your sharp wit and quick come backs. We will miss you at Thanksgiving, Christmas and birthdays. We will miss you around the family Poker table. But rest assured that we will carry your memory in our hearts and our lives. Thank you for watching over all of us. Now it’s your turn to rest. You ran the good race. We are confident that you’re reaping the rewards of your labor.
You’ve earned your rest. Rest in power. Rest in love. Rest in joy. Rest in peace.
We love you, Mom.
