Maria Esperanza C. Martinez passed away on January 26, 2020 in Houston, TX. She was 80 years old. A native resident of Brownsville, TX. she was born on October 29, 1939 and was preceded in death by her husband, Alfredo F. Martinez; her parents, Rodolfo and Ma. De Jesus Cuellar; her sister, Refugio Cuellar; and three brothers, Reynaldo, Juan and Gabriel Cuellar. She is survived by her sister, Consuelo Ocañas and her six children and their spouses: Rosie Anci (David), Diana Weidman (David), Delia Martinez, Elena Martinez-Buley (Robert-deceased), Daniel Martinez (Patty) and David Martinez (Simone). She also is survived by her seven grandchildren.
Esperanza worked in retail for many years and then for the Brownsville Independent School District as a paraprofessional. She enjoyed many years in retirement with her husband Alfredo and moved to Waco, TX. to live with her daughter Rosie and son-in- law David Anci after he died in 2015.
“Pera” was a dedicated, loving wife to her husband for 56 years and a devoted mother. She always said she was at her happiest when surrounded by her children, and called them her best “medicine.” She was also naturally gregarious, had a quick wit and forged many special lifetime friendships. She loved fashion and shopping and was known for her beauty and grace.
In 2008 she was diagnosed with Multiple Myeloma and fought it fiercely for 12 years. On Friday, January 24, she became ill, and two days later she finally found peace and was called home to our savior, Jesus Christ.
Friends and family are cordially invited to attend a “Celebration of Life” reception from 2:00 PM- 6:00 PM on Saturday, February 1, 2020 at the home of her daughter at 12511 Meadow Lake Drive, Houston, TX. 77077. A private mass will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting that donations be made in her name to the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society at LLS.org. or checks may be mailed to 5433 Westheimer #300 Houston, Tx 77056.
