Marie Joan Costello

Marie Joan Costello, lovingly known as RiRi, Aunt RiRi, and later Grand RiRi, passed away peacefully on September 11, 2026, at the age of 71. A devoted wife, loving mother and grandmother, cherished sister, and loyal friend, Marie touched countless lives through her warmth, generosity, and vibrant spirit. She cultivated lifelong friendships through both her personal and professional endeavors and brought joy wherever she went.

Born on April 10, 1955, in Galveston, Texas, Marie was the youngest child of Margaret Almeda Tollett and Horace James Tollett, Sr. She graduated from Mount Carmel High School in Houston and displayed her vitality and charm from an early age. Growing up in a lively household with eight brothers and one sister, Marie undeniably held a special place in her father's heart.

One family story illustrates this perfectly. Her brother Jesse was once convinced that Marie had taken his chocolate bar. When confronted, Marie sheepishly replied through chocolate-stained teeth, "Daddy, it wasn't me." Without hesitation, her father responded, "Jesse, if Marie says she didn't take it, someone else must have." The story became a treasured family memory and a testament to the special bond they shared.

Marie is survived by her deeply devoted husband, Richard Costello, who loved and cherished her beyond measure; her sons, Jason and his wife, Liz, and Mason; and her beloved grandsons, Ashton and Landon, who brought immeasurable joy to her life. She is also survived by her brothers Douglas Tollett and his wife, Brenda; Pat Tollett and his wife, Rosemary; Jesse Tollett and his wife, Linda; Wayne Tollett; her sister-in-law, Jo Ann Tollett and numerous nieces and nephews that adored their Aunt RiRi.

She was preceded in death by her parents and siblings Bobby Tollett, Lee Tollett, Mary Tollett, and Jordy Tollett. In a profound and bittersweet coincidence, her oldest brother, H.J. Tollett, Jr., passed away just four days after Marie. Separated by twenty years in age, the youngest and oldest of the Tollett children departed this world within days of one another, leaving a deep void in the hearts of those who loved them.

Marie embraced every stage of life with enthusiasm and determination. Her professional journey began at a young age and included careers in banking, executive recruiting, and health facility management. While each experience showcased her talents and work ethic, she ultimately discovered her true passion in new home sales.

She began her homebuilding career with Brighton Homes in 1990 and later joined Trendmaker Homes, where she worked from 1994 through 2004. Her exceptional talents earned numerous awards and accolades, including the Houston Home Builders Association Rookie Salesperson of the Year in 1991 and Salesperson of the Year in 2003. Even after transitioning away from full-time sales, Marie continued working part-time while devoting more energy to her family, friendships, and travel. She also loved studying health and beauty topics and generously shared what she learned with others, always seeking ways to enrich the lives of those around her.

Those who knew Marie will forever remember her extraordinary zest for life and her ability to bring joy and laughter to any gathering. She was often the life of the party, never hesitant to turn an ordinary moment into a memorable one.

During one birthday celebration with her sisters-in-law, restaurant tradition required guests to ride a stick horse. Marie not only embraced the ritual but enthusiastically rode her little pony throughout the restaurant, transforming the entire room into part of the celebration. On a family trip to Mallorca, she similarly decided that the atmosphere in a local restaurant needed a little more excitement. She enlisted her sister-in-law, Brenda, they donned their newly-purchased wooden shoes and their impromptu tabletop dance performance left fellow diners surprised, amused, and thoroughly entertained. These moments reflected the spirit that made Marie unforgettable: joyful, fearless, and delightfully spontaneous.

A faithful parishioner of St. John Vianney Catholic Church, Marie served as an Extraordinary Minister of Holy Communion. Her faith guided her life and inspired her commitment to serving others. She generously shared both her time and resources, volunteering for numerous community causes and charitable initiatives.

Above all else, Marie treasured her relationship with Richard. Their marriage was built on friendship, devotion, laughter, and unwavering love. Over the years, they became not only husband and wife but truly the best of friends.

Marie's legacy lives on in the family she loved, the friendships she nurtured, the faith she lived, and the countless lives she brightened with her kindness, humor, and infectious enthusiasm.
