Marilyn Ann Flescher of Katy, Texas passed away unexpectedly on Thursday, July 13, 2023 at the age of 82. She was born on July 31, 1940 in Los Angeles, California where she grew up in a Catholic household that included an extended German family which held traditional Sunday dinners. Marilyn graduated from San Gabriel Mission High School in 1958. She married her beloved husband, Tom Flescher, in 1962 with their wedding reception held at her childhood home. They started their life together in Los Angeles, but transferred to Houston, Texas in 1975 where they raised their three children: Andy, Cathy, and Carrie.
Marilyn served her family her entire life while working full time as a Preschool teacher. She began her teaching career at Merriweather Private School that resided in Walnut Bend, the subdivision she raised her family. Over the years, she earned the reputation of being a teacher parents requested their child to have. She lovingly taught the children and served their families at Merriweather for many years. Her former students often came back to Merriweather to visit her as teenagers and young adults. After deciding to leave Merriweather, she finished her teaching career at Chapelwood United Methodist. At Chapelwood, she again developed close relationships with the families. Marilyn loved teaching so much that she taught until the age of 70. Her teacher friends at Chapelwood became her closest friends that she often lunched and celebrated birthdays with, throughout the rest of her life.
Marilyn was actively involved in the Walnut Bend Swim Team, St. Cyril of Alexandria Catholic Church Choir and Katy Neighbors. She loved her time at Epiphany of the Lord Catholic Church where she was involved in the Choir, Forever Young and the Ladies Club. Attending every sporting and dancing event of her grandchildren was a priority for her. During the past 5 years, she became an active member of St. Bartholomew the Apostle Catholic Church where she attended mass every Saturday night with her friends. She participated in mass every single day via livestream and prayed the rosary daily, often dedicating her rosary prayer time to each of her grandchildren.
Marilyn is preceded in death by her beloved husband, Tom Flescher, her parents, Henry and Catherine Birtja, her brother, Larry Birtja and his son, Jon, and her niece, Lori Van Horst.
Marilyn is survived by her children and families: son, Andy Flescher and wife, Laura, of Houston; daughter, Cathy Bohne and husband, David, of San Antonio; and daughter, Carrie Hightower and husband, Chris, of Katy. Marilyn will be forever remembered by her grandchildren: Kendall and Weston Bohne, Emily and Grant Hightower and James Flescher as well as many nieces and her nephew.
Marilyn truly enjoyed being with her friends and family. She was a proud mother of her three children and loved her son-in-laws and daughter-in-law, as if they were her own. However, the most important title to Marilyn was Grandma. She was the type of grandmother that would drop anything and everything to be there for her children and grandchildren. She often encouraged her children to go out or take trips so she could babysit.
The family would like to thank the staff and residents of Watercrest at Katy Independent Living for the love, fun, and entertainment they provided Marilyn for the last five years. For Marilyn, days at Watercrest included: water aerobics, art classes, holiday activities, live music, an occasional Happy Hour, Physical Therapy, and day after day of playing Hand and Foot, Mahjong, Rummikub and Bingo. Marilyn even had her own stash of Bingo cards that she would call her “lucky cards”. She was a friend to everyone there and made it a point to make new residents feel welcome.
Family and friends are invited to attend a Rosary and Funeral Mass at St. Bartholomew the Apostle Catholic Church at 5356 11th St, Katy, TX 77493 on Saturday, July 29, 2023. The Rosary will begin at 9:30am and the Funeral Mass will begin at 10am. Visitation with the family will be after the Funeral Mass in the Narthex of the church until noon.
