Marilyn Joyce Palmer, age 87, of The Woodlands passed away March 9, 2020 with her daughter by her side. Marilyn was born in Cincinnati, Ohio, July 5, 1932 to Ethel and Roland C. Meyers. She was raised with her four sisters and one brother in Logansport, Indiana, moving to Riviera, Texas during The Great Depression. Her memories of that time were happy since she had such a loving family. In later years, her family moved to Channelview, Texas where she graduated from Lee High School in Baytown. She is a proud graduate of Lon Morris College, even prouder that her three children graduated from there, too. She went on to graduate with a B.S. degree in Education from The University of Houston. She began her teaching career in Channelview.
In 1960, she met Jerry, the love of her life, at St. Paul’s Methodist Church in Houston. They married on May 27, 1960 and settled in their new house in Channelview. In 1964, they decided to move to Palestine, Texas where they raised their three children with the love and support of her parents, Roland and Ethel Meyers. She taught 4th grade with the Palestine Independent School District for 30 years before retiring in 1986. Other than being with her family, she was happiest in the classroom with her students. She was also a devoted member of First Methodist Church of Palestine and volunteered in the Infirmary for several summers at Lakeview Methodist Assembly.
In 2006, Marilyn and Jerry moved to Friendswood, and then finally settled in The Woodlands at The Forum to be close to their daughter. They celebrated 57 years together in 2017.
Marilyn is preceded in death by her husband Jerry, her parents, and brother Jack Meyers. She is survived by her daughter Susan who lives in Spring, her son Mark and wife Julie from Keller, son Michael and wife Lori from Beaumont, granddaughters Lauren and Dylan, and grandsons Zach and Dakota. She is also survived by her sisters Jean Harnasch, Rita Sample, Jan Parks, and Sue Peel, and many loving brothers- in- law, nieces, nephews, and friends. The family would like to thank Marilyn’s “adopted” daughters Jenny and Paula Krouse and Becky Fletcher for their 13 years of fun, love, and support. Susan couldn’t have helped her parents all alone. The family would also like to thank the nurses and staff at The Forum, the caregivers at SureCare, and finally, Annette and Jean from Altus Hospice. The love and care you all gave kept her going before and after the cancer diagnosis.
A memorial service will be held at American Heritage Funeral Home, 10710 Veteran’s Memorial Drive, Houston, TX 77038 on Saturday, June 20, 2020 at 11:00 a.m.. She will be buried at Houston National Cemetery next to her husband.
In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting donations to her husband’s Alzheimer’s site at www.alz.org. They have set up a memorial page under his full name Jerry Elvin Palmer. The link is http://act.alz.org/site/TR/Events/Tributes-AlzheimersChampions?pxfid=461424&fr_id=1060&pg=fund
