On November 13, 2018, the Lord welcomed Marion Morrison (Jerry) Campbell, beloved husband, father and grandfather. Born May 14, 1929, in Washtucna, Washington, he was the son of the Reverend D. Rayburn Campbell and Marion Elizabeth Morrison Campbell, who predeceased him, as did his brother James Coleman Campbell, and granddaughter Patricia Elizabeth Walker. He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Charlotte Cron Campbell, brother and sister-in-law the Rev. G. David Campbell and Margaret Cummings Campbell of Maryville, TN, daughter Geraldine Morrison (Geri) Campbell Walker and her husband, Tom, of Bryan, and their children Steve (and Ilana Moskowitz Walker) Matthew and Mary Kate, along with many beloved nieces and nephews and their families.
Jerry was a graduate of Maryville College (B.A. in Biology) in Maryville, Tennessee and received his Masters in Biology from Trinity University in San Antonio. He served in the U.S. Army as a lab technician and instructor toward the end of the Korean War. Following his service, he worked as a lab technician for Callery Chemical Company in Callery, PA. He eventually returned to Texas where he worked for the new School of Aerospace Medicine at Brooks Air Force Base, San Antonio. For 22 years he worked as a biologist and electron microscopist at the University of Texas Dental Science Institute from which he retired in 1991. Among his proudest accomplishments was a significant contribution to the experimental design and data analysis of a study conducted aboard the International Space Station.
He was an avid sports fan and baseball (later softball) player. He played for many years on teams of the Harris County Senior Softball League, taking great pride in the distinction of having played a senior softball championship game in the Astrodome. His greatest joy, however, was traveling to see his grandchildren. He served as both a Deacon and Elder of Bellaire Presbyterian Church and, at the time of his death, was a member of St. Mark's United Methodist Church.
A funeral service will be held at the American Heritage Funeral Home on Wednesday, November 21st at noon, with visitation preceding the service from 11:00 am to 12:00 pm. Interment will immediately follow at the Houston Veterans Cemetery. Memorial gifts may be made to Maryville College, Maryville, TN 37804, M.D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, the Houston Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) or to the charity of your choice.
The family wishes to express its profound gratitude to his M.D. Anderson care team, to the entire team from Compassus Hospice, and to so very many extraordinary caregivers, friends and family members whose generous displays of Christian love and affection gave him (and them) great comfort through his cancer battle.
