Marion Martin Clauder moved to his heavenly home on Monday, March 15, 2010 after a courageous battle with leukemia. He was born in Houston on March 20, 1939 to Otto Clauder and Alberta Charpiot Clauder. Marion was a fourth generation Houstonian whose grandfather and father owned businesses on Houston’s rural north side.
Marion graduated with honors from Jeff Davis High School. He maintained contacts and friendships with his classmates at Davis by serving on the reunion committees for over 52 years. Marion attended Baylor University and the University of Texas at Austin receiving a degree in electrical engineering in 1962. He began his career with Humble Oil and Refining (Exxon) working as a production engineer in Tomball, TX. His lifelong interest in the financial markets led him to leave the oil industry in the late 1960s and embark on a career as a financial advisor with Eppler, Guerin and Turner. He continued in this profession until 2004 when he retired from Wachovia.
At an early age, Marion developed a lifetime love of music. He played both the trombone and piano. Marion was active in his high school band, the Houston Youth Symphony, and as a member of the Rice Institute band. He was also a member of the Baylor Marching Band. He continued to pursue his passion by participating in music activities and the orchestra at church.
Marion’s love of God and desire to serve led him to Garden Oaks Baptist Church in Houston where he met his wife Sylvia Thornton. They married in August 22, 1964 at Garden Oaks and spent 44 years together until her death in 2008. Marion was a longstanding deacon at the church where he served on numerous committees until his death. Marion will be remembered for his dedication to the Lord. Marion was a quiet and calm man that led by example. His word was his currency in all relationships. Forgiveness and compassion were his creed. Marion’s faith never wavered when he was diagnosed with cancer over 30 years ago. He strongly and bravely battled re-occurring episodes of lymphoma, squamous cell cancer, and finally leukemia. He remained a dignified role model and inspiring witness to all until the end.
