Although born in Minnesota, Mark grew up in New Milford, New Jersey, where he discovered his love of baseball, playing with his father as coach. In high school he earned the nickname “Bus”—perfect for a guy always driving the pranks. His early adventures included attending the iconic Woodstock music festival before pursuing higher education at Sam Houston State University, where he went on to earn both his undergraduate and graduate degrees.
Mark eventually settled in Houston, Texas, a city he proudly called home for the rest of his life. His career in the oil and gas industry gave him opportunities to work in demanding and far-flung places—on the Alaskan pipeline and deep in the Guatemalan jungle—where he brought together expertise, resilience, and an adventurous spirit.
His love of motorcycles began in his teenage years, and throughout his life he found freedom and joy riding BMW bikes on open roads. He also delighted in traveling the country in his RV, crisscrossing the Pacific Northwest, the Rockies, and the Midwest, each journey adding to the story of a life fully lived.
If you’re reading this, there’s a good chance you have at least one postcard from Mark. He loved sending them from his many adventures near and far—a simple, heartfelt way of keeping friends and family close, no matter where the road or skies carried him.
Mark’s Irish heritage was central to who he was. Ireland held a special place in his heart, and he traveled there many times, immersing himself in the culture he so cherished. He was even in the process of pursuing Irish citizenship—a reflection of how deeply he valued connection to his roots. He had a gift for conversation, the Irish craic, and could make friends with anyone, anywhere. His love of Cajun food was another signature joy—he delighted in good meals, good company, and the laughter that followed.
Mark will be remembered not only for his adventures but also for his humor, generosity, and the countless friendships he built along the way.
He is survived by his wife, Rose Reilly; his daughter, Elizabeth Jagunic, and son-in-law, Matthew; and his treasured grandchildren, Claire and Ryan. He is also survived by his sisters, Mary Christian and Nancy Hutzler (Paul); his nephew, Reilly Holmgreen (Staci); his niece, Elana Cleveland (Dan); and many dear friends and extended family.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his son, Mark Andrew Reilly Jr.; his sister, Catherine Anne Holmgreen; and his brother, Basil William Reilly.
A private burial will be held at Memorial Oaks Cemetery, followed by a celebration of life to honor a man who truly lived life to the fullest.
“May the road rise up to meet you,
May the wind be always at your back,
May the sun shine warm upon your face,
May the rains fall soft upon your fields,
And until we meet again,
May God hold you in the palm of his hand.”
