Marlena Francis Compton Manning passed away peacefully on July 28, 2025, at the age of 88. Born on August 3, 1936, in Celeste, Texas, she was the eldest of five children born to Coy and Pauline Compton.
Her early years were shaped by a close-knit family and a move to Houston, Texas, where she would later meet the love of her life, Joe Manning, while working at Kress Department Store. They married on November 5, 1954, and spent 62 wonderful years together, raising a family and building a life of dedication, service, and love.
As a proud military wife, Marlena supported Joe through 28 years of service in the United States Marine Corps, often serving as both mother and father while he was stationed across the country and around the world. In 1970, after Joe’s retirement, Marlena fulfilled her wish to return to Houston and be close to family. She began a new chapter working for Exxon, where she remained for 20 years before retiring at age 57.
Marlena was a woman of faith, strength, and joy. In retirement, she cherished time with her family and found delight in two favorite pastimes, shopping and talking for hours. She and Joe enjoyed dining out, caring for their beloved dogs, and simply being together. In her later years, Marlena often said she had lived a long, comfortable, and blessed life.
She was a devoted member of Deerbrook Baptist Church and leaves behind a legacy of warmth, resilience, and unwavering love for her family.
Marlena was preceded in death by her parents, Coy and Pauline Compton; her beloved husband, Joe Manning; her son, Robert Manning; her sister, Coy Jo Martin; and her brother, Jimmy Compton.
She is survived by her daughters, Pam Pitre and Susan Gary; her grandson, Joey Bristow; great-granddaughter, Bella Bristow; her brother, Buddy Compton; her sister, Debbie Allen; and many nieces, nephews, and dear friends.
Marlena’s life was a testament to love, faith, and family. She will be deeply missed and forever remembered.
