Martha Ilene Elwood Davis, 106, born on January 17, 1920, to Harvey Palmer Elwood and Lela May (Gilbert) Elwood in Warren, Indiana, passed away on May 9, 2026. Martha’s long life was marked by steady devotion to family, faith, and the quiet, enduring work of making a home and a community more beautiful through care and craft. She carried with her a deep appreciation for the places and people who shaped her years.
Martha’s family came to Texas because her father worked for Humble Oil, a move that set the course for much of her life. She graduated from Bellville High School and later moved to Houston, where she began working for Southwestern Camera on Main Street. Through that chapter of her life, she began attending First Methodist Church, where she found lasting fellowship. She formed many friendships in the church sewing group and remained a faithful presence there for many years.
Her hands were rarely still. Martha loved quilting with her mother and treasured the companionship and purpose she found in sewing alongside friends at church. She was also an avid gardener, known especially for the extraordinary azaleas at her house in Rockport, Texas—flowers that reflected her patient attention and the quiet pride she took in nurturing living things to flourish.
Martha is preceded in death by her husband of 65 years, Warren Davis, her parents, Harvey and Lela Elwood, and her sister, Doris.
She is survived by her two sons, Carl Davis (Austin, Texas) and Mark Davis (Rockport, Texas), and her friends at First Methodist Church, as well as her friends in Bentwood Circle.
Visitation will be held at Forest Park Westheimer Funeral Home, 12800 Westheimer Road, Houston, TX 77077, on May 18, 2026, from 11:00 am to 11:30 am.
A Committal Service will follow at Forest Park Westheimer Cemetery, 12800 Westheimer Road, Houston, TX 77077, on May 18, 2026, from 12:00 pm to 12:30 pm.
