Born on the 28th of October 1937, in Houston, to Murray and Bernice Kyger, Martha was the beloved sister of her younger brother, Thomas Murray Kyger. She grew up in Fort Worth, where she developed a deep appreciation for the beauty of nature and the arts. After attending The Hockaday School, she attended The University of Texas where she was a member of the Tri Delta sorority and graduated in 1960.
In 1961, Martha married Dewuse Guyton, and together they raised three children in Houston. Their home was always filled with the beauty of Martha's sense of style, vibrant flower arrangements from her garden, the joy of their pets, and the warmth of gatherings with friends and family to enjoy her culinary talents. She had a remarkable gift for making every corner of her world more beautiful.
Martha was a lifelong lover of horses. She was an accomplished equestrian, earning many awards, including the prestigious Bronze Medal Award in Third Level Dressage as a senior rider. She continued her riding through the age of eighty-five. In addition to her equestrian pursuits, Martha’s love for the arts was ever-present. Whether watercolor painting, attending the opera, or enjoying ballet, Martha embraced the beauty of the world with open arms, sharing her appreciation for art with all who crossed her path.
A longtime member of St. John the Divine Episcopal Church, Martha served on the Altar Guild and Flower Guild, where her artistic flair and dedication left an indelible mark on the church community. Martha lived out her faith in the everyday moments of her life. She was also an active member and supporter of the River Oaks Blossom Club, Bayou Bend Collection and Gardens, the Antique Study Group, and the Houston Grand Opera. For Martha, community and beauty went hand in hand, and she was dedicated to cultivating both in all aspects of her life.
Martha is survived by her husband, Dewuse Guyton; and their three children: son, Philip Dewuse Guyton and his wife Julie, and their children, Emily, and Matthew; son, Andrew Murray Guyton and his children, Kyger, Layton, Noah, and Eli; and daughter, Nancy Guyton Christensen and her husband Trey, and their children, Abby, John Murray, and Patrick.
The family extends special thanks to the wonderful nurses and caretakers at Silverado Hermann Park Memory Care Community for their compassion and care during the final stages of Martha’s life.
Martha’s spirit of joy, creativity, and love will continue to bloom in the hearts of all who knew her.
A memorial service is to be conducted at eleven o’clock in the morning on Friday, the 24th of January, at The Church of St. John the Divine, 2450 River Oaks Boulevard in Houston, where the Rev. Reagan W. Cocke is to officiate.
