June Hackney Rainey passed away peacefully while surrounded by her family on Monday, the 24th of January 2022 at the age of 94. She was born on the 13th of June 1927, in Houston, to Thomas Franklin Hackney and Luna Adele Hooper.
June was a loving daughter, sister, wife and mother. She was a fun-loving grandmother and great grandmother. Her faith gave her strength and her family brought her joy and she considered both to be a great blessing.
She was a devout Catholic and attended St. Anne School, St. Agnes Academy, St. Mary-of-the-Woods College in Terre Haute, Indiana and graduated from The University of Houston. At the University of Houston, she met and fell in love with, Walter Mayfield Rainey, Jr. They married on the 28th of January 1950 and had a loving marriage until his death in 1991. There are so many words to describe June. She was kind, patient, gentle, compassionate and forgiving. She was selfless in the way she loved her family and friends. She always had a big smile, a joyful approach to life, a great sense of humor and always a gracious lady.
She was a friend to her children’s friends, who loved and trusted her as she was a great listener and confidant. June gave her many talents to different organizations throughout her life where she made lasting friendships. She was a tireless volunteer, a great fundraiser, especially for her children’s schools, St. Michael Catholic School and Strake Jesuit. She found great pleasure and enjoyed the friendships she made with the ladies in her “birthday club” that met monthly.
June is preceded in death by her husband, Walter, her sister Marjorie Hackney Falloure and her son-in-law H. Dixon Montague. She is survived by her son, Richard Randall Rainey and wife Sandy; son, Rodney Hackney Rainey and wife Patty and daughter, Suzanne Rainey Montague.
