Mary Carr Cone, beloved wife, mother, Nana, aunt and friend to so many; passed away in Tomball, Texas on September 4th, 2024, leaving a void her family cannot fill but a legacy of love, laughter and faith.
She was born in Oakman, Alabama in 1937 to Joseph and Melissa Gilchrist, where she developed a deep love for her southern roots and the University of Alabama. Mary attended Tuscaloosa County High School and attended the University of Houston taking classes in business. She worked tirelessly in her role as an Area Manager for Southwestern Bell, where she retired after 32 years of service. She then went on to be the director of volunteers at Heights Hospital where she helped countless individuals manage the complexities of that environment. She also held several positions following her retirement at Sony, a local Dental Office, and at the Harris County Appraisal District. Mary was a devoted member of the Baptist Temple Church in the Heights where she and her late husband, John, were committed to supporting others’ faith, taught regular Sunday School and was involved in countless volunteer events. Among her many accolades, Mary was consistently involved with the Heights community leading to a Proclamation, awarding her of Citizen of the Year and naming April 19th, 1988 as Mary Carr Day.
Mary was a devoted mother to Susan Pederson, her pride and joy, a grandmother to Mary Kathryn and Kristina and a proud great grandmother to Avery, Kimber, Brooklyn and Kaysen. Mary’s devotion to her family was unmatched. She always said God had blessed her beyond measure and they felt that in the love and support she provided.
Mary took special joy in creating change and influence in other’s lives by focusing on helping them reunite with loved ones, finding their spiritual path towards Jesus and acknowledging their own worth through her kind gestures and relentless compassion. Mary had fond memories of family trips, attending extra-curricular activities for her grandchildren, and spending time caring for her dogs and cats.
Mary was preceded in death by her husband John Cone, her parents Melissa and Joseph Gilchrest, and siblings, Betty Jane, Joseph Jr, Wilmar, Bobby and Jerry. Mary is survived by her daughter, Susan Pederson and spouse Paul, Granddaughters, Mary Kathryn Lyssy and spouse Shelly, great grandchildren Brooklyn and Kaysen; Kristina Pederson and great grandchildren Avery and Kimber; Chris Kethan, step son, and spouse Cristi, and their children and grandchildren; Paul Carr and so many nieces, nephews, and friends: all who will never forget the love she brought to their lives.
