Mary Katherine Fritsche

Mary Katherine Fritsche, 89, of Cypress, Texas, passed away on September 28, 2026. She was born on February 13, 1937, at Hermann Charity Hospital in Houston, Texas, to Claude McConathy and Martha McConathy.

Mary graduated from Aldine High School and went on to earn her bachelor’s degree from the University of Houston in 1958, where she majored in Education and minored in Home Economics.

Mary’s love story with William “Bill” Fritsche began close to home. The two met in the neighborhood where they grew up, and their friendship blossomed into a lifelong love. They were married on Saturday, April 16, 1960, beginning a marriage filled with more than six decades of shared memories, family, and life together.

Education was a lifelong calling for Mary. She devoted more than 25 years to teaching, beginning her career as a Home Economics teacher at Smiley High School. She later became an elementary school teacher at Splendora Elementary and Porter Elementary, where she shared her knowledge, patience, and enthusiasm with generations of young students. Her dedication to teaching was recognized when she was named Teacher of the Year in 1995.

Beyond the classroom, Mary was a woman of remarkable creativity and curiosity. She was an avid gardener and found joy in watching things grow. She loved sewing, painting, playing the piano, reading, and writing poetry. She also loved to sing. Whether tending her garden, creating something with her hands, sitting at the piano, getting lost in a good book, or putting her thoughts into poetry, Mary embraced life with creativity and enthusiasm.

Above all, Mary treasured her family. She is survived by her daughters, Kara Parker; Kendra Smith and her husband, Wayne Smith; and Kristina Slay and her husband, Michael Slay. She was a proud grandmother to five grandchildren: Elyssa Radenz and her fiancé, Devin Ikerd; Sydney Slay; Joshua Slay; Ashleigh Smith; and Garrett Smith. Her family was an important part of her life, and the memories and love she shared with them will continue through the generations.

Mary was preceded in death by her beloved husband, William “Bill” Fritsche; her mother, Martha Fiedler; her stepfather, Rudolph Fiedler; her father, Claude McConathy; and her brother, Michael McConathy.

Mary leaves behind a legacy of love, learning, creativity, and family. Her years as a teacher touched countless young lives, while her love of music, art, gardening, reading, and poetry revealed the many dimensions of a woman who never stopped learning or creating. She will be remembered and deeply missed by her family, friends, former students, and all who had the privilege of knowing her.
