Mary Jane Flatt

She was born April 28th, 1929 in Coffeyville, Kansas to Allan Henry Brooks and Jane Ann Hansen Brooks.

After graduating from high school, she attended North Texas State University in Denton, Texas where she earned a Bachelor of Science in Physical Education with a Minor in English. While attending North Texas State, she met her husband, David Otis Flatt. They were married for 51 years.

Shortly, after their marriage in 1950, David accepted a position as an accountant with and oil and gas company, where Mary Jane began her career as an educator in Brownfield, Texas. In 1953 the couple relocated to Dallas, where Mary Jane taught in Cedar Hill. After the birth of their 1st child, Paula, in 1954, Mary Jane took time off to raise their daughters, Melissa Anne, and Ellen. She was a loving and devoted mother who treasured her children.

In 1962, David accepted a position with Oasis Oil Company and the family relocated to Tripoli, Libya, where they spent the next 8 years. While in Libya, Mary Jane worked as a teacher at the American Community School. In 1970 the family returned to the US for a couple of years, and then in 1972, relocated to Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. In 1975 they returned to the US where Mary Jane, taught in Aldine ISD until her retirement.

In retirement, Mary Jane enjoyed gardening, maintaining her beloved swimming pool and following Houston’s pro sports teams.

Mary Jane was preceded in death by her parents, Allan and Jane Brooks, her sister, Beverly Anne Brooks Ferguson and daughter, Melissa Anne Flatt Estes.

She is survived by her daughter Paula Flatt Wadsworth and husband Steve, daughter Ellen Flatt Zobal and husband Art, son-in-law Michael Estes, 7 Grandchildren and 3 Great Grandchildren. She will be missed by all that loved her and be forever in our hearts.

A private family memorial will be held in the coming days.
