Mary Cherney McDivitt passed peacefully into the arms of the Lord surrounded by the love of her family. A beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, friend, educator, and woman of deep faith, she devoted her life to caring for others through compassion, kindness, and selfless service.
She was the cherished daughter of the late Arthur and Doris Cherney; the beloved sister of the late Claudia DeGuire, Ann (Tom) Ryder, and Michael (Isabelle) Cherney.
Mary’s greatest pride was her family. She was the devoted wife of John of 58 years; loving mother of her children: Matt (Robin), John (Monica), Elizabeth (Mark), and the late Mary Margaret. She also leaves behind seven grandchildren whom she was incredibly proud of: Zachary (Lauren), Patrick (Emily), Benjamin, Luke, Samantha, Andrew (Rachel), and Joshua; two great-grandchildren: Ella and Annie; and extended family members who will forever treasure her memory.
A native of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, Mary lived in Houston for forty-two years and made a lasting impact on all who knew her. She graduated from Milton College in Milton, Wisconsin, and dedicated much of her professional life to service and education, touching countless lives with her patience, warmth, and generosity.
During the Vietnam War, she served with the American Red Cross in Vietnam, providing morale and recreation support to American servicemen far from home. She continued to work for the American Red Cross upon her return to the United States. Her service reflected her courage, compassion, and lifelong commitment to helping others.
Mary was a deeply devout Catholic whose faith guided every aspect of her life. Family was the center of her world, and she served as the loving matriarch of her family, always offering wisdom, encouragement, prayer, and unconditional love.
Though her family mourns her loss profoundly, they find comfort in knowing she is now reunited with loved ones who went before her and resting peacefully in the loving embrace of God.
