Mary F. Padgett, 81, passed away Friday, June 27, 2025, peacefully at her residence. Mary was born November 4, 1943, in Orange, Texas to her father, Dempsey Ezra Cosper, and mother, Othilge “Tilly” Cosper. She lived in Orange until she met and married her husband, George Padgett, and moved to Humble upon her marriage and spent the rest of her life as a resident.
She attended Lamar University and East Texas Baptist University. She graduated from Liberty Theological Seminary with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Christian Ministry. She was ordained into the ministry by Pastor John Osteen of Lakewood Church in 1992. She served in the praise and worship meetings for the John Osteen Evangelistic Association, the Full Gospel Businessmen’s Fellowship, and the local AGLOW. She also performed in the ensemble for the Thurlow Spur’s Houston Concert Choir.
Mary did bread distribution and street ministry for two years in Bordersville, Texas, and held a weekly Bible study at the women’s prison halfway house in Houston. She held a weekly Bible study luncheon at the Best Western for eight years, did home Bible studies, and spoke at various women’s retreats. Her work in ministry also included mission trips to Mexico, Honduras, the Luzon region in the northern Philippines, and the Tukuran region in the southern Philippines. Since January 2, 1999, she has written and published a daily devotional, A Word in Due Season, that reached at least 46 nations via email.
She worked for over 18 years for World Gospel Outreach, a mission organization with schools and orphanages in Honduras and Belize, as the Data Manager in the accounting department under the Chief Financial Officer opening her home to these missionaries when they were stateside.
Mary’s passion in life was not only the ministry but also spending time with her family. She was a devoted mother to her three sons, George, Nathan, and John, and a doting “Mimi” to her three grandchildren, Faith, Joel, and Jackie.
She is preceded in death by her parents and siblings: John Henry Cosper and wives Alma and Helen Thrasher, James Edward Cosper and his wife Catherine, Melvin Leroy Cosper, Betty McClain and her husband Ralph, and Dempsey Carnell “Rip” Cosper. She is also preceded in death by her loving husband, George Winfred Padgett.
Mary is survived by her three sons and their wives: George and Sabrina Padgett, Nathan Padgett, and John Padgett and Megan Louise Doyle. She is also survived by her three grandchildren: Faith Padgett and her fiancé Seth Maldonado, Joel Padgett, and Jackie Doyle-Padgett, two sisters-in-law, Elizabeth Honey and Sally Cosper, many nieces and nephews, and a host of precious friends.
Mary will be dearly missed by all those who were blessed to know and love her.
A visitation for Mary will be held Wednesday, July 2, 2025 from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM at Brookside Funeral Home, 13747 Eastex Freeway, Houston, TX 77039. A funeral service will occur Thursday, July 3, 2025 from 10:30 AM to 11:30 AM with a graveside to follow at Brookside Memorial Park.
