

Mary Jauregui Ramos of Sugarland, Texas, passed away on January 1, 2021. She was 84 years old. Mary was born in Robstown, Texas in May of 1936, as the oldest of 11 children (5 brothers and 5 sisters). She always felt very blessed to have been a “preacher’s kid”.
Mary grew up in the Church singing at a very young age. She started singing solos in the Church, beginning at around age 12 with no formal training. In July of 1955, Mary was wed to Joe Ramos, having met him at Church, which was after he had returned from serving in the United States Marine Corps during the Korean Conflict. While serving two tours of duty, Joe was awarded a Silver Star and two Purple Hearts. Mary was widowed, having lost her husband on April 7, 2013. Her husband Joe is interred at the Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington Virginia.
Mary and Joe moved to Houston in 1955 from El Campo, Texas. Soon, they joined Trinity Baptist Church in near North Houston. Mary applied for and got accepted into the University of Houston, Downtown Campus, where she attended for three years. Her favorite courses were Art History and Philosophy. Soon, Mary earned a position in the university library, where she worked until her retirement for over 18 years. The greatest part of Mary’s time working at the university and attending classes is she took so many opportunities to travel and see the world! Mary has visited 19 countries. Her first trip was to England. Some of the other countries she has visited are Turkey, Greece, Italy, France, Austria, Germany, Spain, Australia, China and Russia.
Mary joined South Main Baptist Church, where she served for many years. She sang in the choir and performed volunteer work. She also served on the board of the Wesley Community Center in near North Houston for several years. Mary loved volunteer work and also taught English as a second language. Along with her passion for serving the Lord at church, her music and singing in the choir, Mary loved her family, children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. She never tired of social interaction, and she was also an active supporter of the arts. She loved attending the symphony and opera.
Mary is survived by her and her husband’s four children, Joe Jr. and wife Ruth, Gregory and wife Dang, Cynthia, and the youngest, Linda Marie and husband Manny; grandchildren, Jacob, Amanda, Elijah, Nacol, Edward, Samantha, and Lil Gregory; great grandchildren, Micah J., Naomi, Niah, Amy, Rui, Byron Jr., Lilliana, Christian, Justin, Gabby, Alyssa, and Hunter; and siblings Porfirio Jr., Rudy, Naomi, Rosie, Juanita and Ruth.
Mary loved sharing her love for the Lord and how much He has blessed her throughout her life. Mary would often sing and say, “It is well, it is well with my soul.”
Private viewings will be held for the family at American Heritage Funeral Home, 10710 Veterans Memorial Drive, Houston, Texas, 77038, (281) 445-0050. A Celebration of Life will be scheduled at a later date. Interment will follow at Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington, Virginia, 22211.
