Mary Yancey Walker has fought the good fight, she has finished the race, she has kept the faith. Mary, dedicated mother, treasured grandmother and loyal friend to many, passed away from earth to her true heavenly home on the 2nd of June, 2014.

Mary was born on the 27th of August, 1935, in Kansas City, Missouri, and later moved to Wichita, Kansas. After graduating from East High School, she attended the University of Kansas and then returned to Wichita where she started her family. After receiving her master’s degree in art from California State University, Northridge, Mary settled in Aspen where she opened Aspen's first School of Art in the renowned Brand Building. An avid traveler and a talented painter and sculptor, Mary inspired many with her ability to capture the beauty of Colorado landscapes, African wildlife and everyday people. She was a blessing to her family and friends, and her adventuresome spirit has touched their lives forever.

She is survived by her loving children, Jeff Wood and his wife, Shana; Rebecca Wood-Kipperman and her husband, Robert; Scott Wood; Tana Wood and Eric Walker. Mary enjoyed the love of her grandchildren, Jeff, Elizabeth, and Connor Wood; Max and Sam Kipperman; and Carter Wood; and her devoted companion of 18 years, Dwight Hibbard. Mary is also survived by her niece, Sally Hershberger. She is preceded in death by her parents, Martha and Frank Yancey, and her sister, Virginia Hershberger.

Friends are cordially invited to a visitation with the family from five o’clock in the afternoon until seven o’clock in the evening on Tuesday, the 3rd of June, in the parlor of Geo. H. Lewis & Sons, 1010 Bering Drive in Houston. The memorial service is to be conducted at eleven o’clock in the morning of Wednesday, the 4th of June, in the Hankamer Chapel of Second Baptist Church, 6400 Woodway Drive. The family will gather for a private interment in Aspen, Colorado.

In lieu of customary remembrances, contributions may be directed to Every Village at everyvillage.org.

She loved the mountains-
The mountains loved her.
We shared hours outdoors photographing memories that are part of her lasting legacy.
We see her bright eyes and warm smile live on in her children.

Hearing the news of Yancey's passing saddened us greatly, but we celebrate her now being in a better place. Our deepest sympathies and love go out to her family.

When Yancey moved in across the street, little did we know that a neighbor could become such a dear and beloved friend....her infectious laugh, the sparkle in her eye when talking about her family and her adventures....the many meals and stories shared....talking about her paintings in progress.....we were blessed to have known this energetic, passionate and unique personality! She will be deeply missed but never forgotten....

Our love and friendship to all her family members....Ande and Peter Rooney, Ulster Park, NY

We were very saddened by the news of Yancey's passing. She left an indelible memory in our minds with her adventuresome spirit and very gracious personality. She was an absolute delight and one of the more interesting personalities we have ever had the pleasure of knowing. How lucky we all are to have shared our brief moments with her.
