OBITUARY

Melody Michon SCURLOCK

September 27, 1965June 23, 2020

Melody Michon Scurlock was born the 27th day of September in the year of 1965. She was the second daughter born to the union between O’Hara L. Scurlock (deceased) and Winstona L. Scurlock-Chadwick. She was the sister of Kimona K. (Scurlock) Dixon. To know Melody was to love her. She was known by many for her deep “Melody” voice, big brown eyes, brilliant wit, academic scholarship, and beautiful poetry writing. Melody was a brilliant mind intellectually. Her academic astuteness earned her excellent grades, and scholarship awards. She was affectionately nicknamed “Barbara Jordan” by friends and family, and Kim who always said she should be on Jeopardy, constantly ran her down to read and edit her college papers. Melody always corrected them with no-nonsense firmness, but also with love. Melody was an avid reader and wrote the most beautiful poetry of places, events, life, and of her love for her father. She was a dog-lover and remained a devoted dog-owner who loved and cared for her three dogs, until she could no longer. Melody was baptized at Our Lady of Sorrows Catholic Church and made her First Holy Communion and Confirmation at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church. She attended St. Francis of Assisi Elementary School, Incarnate Word Academy High School, and the University of St. Thomas where she graduated with a Bachelor of Science Degree in International Studies. Melody chose to enter the United States Army after high school instead of attending one of the prestigious colleges and universities she was accepted to. She served in the military from 1984 to 1987 and traveled the world during her service. She received an honorable discharge and returned to civilian life working in the corporate sector, Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston and the City of Houston. Melody is survived by her loving and devoted mother, Winstona L. Scurlock-Chadwick, sister, Kimona K. Dixon, brother-in-law, Joseph Dixon, step-brothers, Keith Chadwick and Kevin Chadwick, nephews, Kristopher Dixon, Noah Dixon and Nile Dixon, niece, Nia Dixon, and a host of loving family and loving friends. Melody loved to dance toward the end of her life, and without warning would breakout with a little step, rocking to the left, then rocking to the right while amusing her caregivers and family. We are with certain, that she is now dancing with her Daddy in heaven, before our heavenly Father, who is well-pleased.

Sending our deepest sympathy to the Scurlock-Dixon family. Saddened to hear of Melody’s transition. She had a very sweet soul. Be encouraged to know that there was life on this side for her, and there is life on the other side, also! Thanks be to God who gives us the victory!

It was a pleasure to have Melody as an employee. She was witty, smart and had great skills in arts & craft. The staff, youth, seniors, department and myself will miss our friend.
We would like to thank you for allowing her to be a part of the Houston Parks & Recreation Family.
