Mervin “Merv” Leroy Sather, 80, of Houston Texas, passed away on October 22, 2020. Merv was born on September 1, 1940 in Fosston, Minnesota to his parents, Arnold Sather, Sr, and Myrtle Sather Haug.
Merv graduated in the Class of 1958 from Ulen High School and then entered the united States Air Force, where he served from 1958 until 1964. While in the service, he attended Yale University and became a military Language Specialist, with proficiency in the Chinese Mandarin language. At his time of discharge from the service, he was an Airman Second Class.
Merv later in life continued his educational pursuits, completing a Bachelors Degree in Accounting from the University of Houston – Clear Lake and then a Masters Degree in Accounting from the University of Houston – Main Campus.
He was employed as a chemist for Armco Steel for almost two decades and then transitioned into the health care arena. He worked in healthcare for over 25 years and then retired after serving as the Controller for The Medical Center of Southeast Texas in Port Arthur, Texas.
Merv was an amazing husband and incredible father to his children. He was an avid Texans and Astro’s fan and placed his focus on supporting, loving, and caring for his family. Family was always number one with Merv.
He is survived by his loving wife, Dawn, his son Eric (Dia) Sather, his daughters, Kirsten (Frederick) Hink, Tina (Jeff) George, and step-son, Chris (Rosie) Lasiter, and step-daughter, Katie (Steven) Hare. He is also survived by eleven grandchildren and his brother, Arnold (Geraldine) Sather, Jr. and his sister, Gloria (Stan) Price.
Merv was preceded in death by his parents, Arnold Sather, Sr. and Myrtle Sather Haug.
Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, October 28, 2020 at 11:45 AM in the Chapel of American Heritage Funeral Home. Graveside committal services will be held on Wednesday, October 28, 2020 at 12:45 PM in the Houston National Cemetery with full United States Air Force Military Honors. The family has a reception planned to be held immediately following the committal service at the funeral home reception center. All of those in attendance at the service are invited to join the family for this reception.
