Mike was born in Madison, Wisconsin, on the 24th of September 1937, and grew up in Gladewater, in the piney woods of East Texas. He served in the United States Army and graduated from Stephen F. Austin State University with a Bachelor of Science in biology. In Shreveport, Louisiana, he met Marilynn, the love of his life, and together they built a home there before settling in Houston in 1984, where he lived for the next four decades.
Mike began his career in the oil industry and later became a broker in wire and plastics. He was a longtime member and former president of The Colonneh Club in Houston, where he could usually be found holding court over a good meal, a glass of wine, and plenty of laughter with friends.
Those who knew Mike will remember him first for his laugh. It was contagious, freely given, and found in almost everything — a room was simply lighter with him in it. He was a painter with a real eye for it, a devoted lover of good food and good wine, and never one to skip dessert. He and Marilynn shared a passion for collecting Japanese antiques, and their home reflected a lifetime of that shared curiosity. He admired cars in all their forms, cheered on football every fall, and had a soft spot for every dog he ever met. More than anything, though, he loved time with his family. That, and the laughter that filled it, is the legacy he leaves behind.
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Marilynn. He is survived by his daughter, Michelle; his son, Michael Jr.; his grandchildren, Alex Sandlin and Kendall Sandlin; and several great-grandchildren who adored him.
Friends are cordially invited to a Celebration of Mike's Life at two o'clock in the afternoon on Wednesday, the 26th of August, in the Jasek Chapel of Geo. H. Lewis & Sons, 1010 Bering Drive in Houston. Immediately following, all are invited to greet the family during a reception in the adjacent grand foyer.
