Michael 'Mike' Cary Brown, native Texan and longtime Houston resident, passed away at home on Saturday morning, the 31st of May 2014, surrounded by the love of his family after a courageous battle with cancer. He was 58.
Mike was born in Angleton, Texas, on the 6th of March 1956, to Dr. GB and Faye (Potter) Brown. Michael said he was one of the luckiest people in the world to have been born to such great parents. Dr. Brown was a well-respected and much loved town doctor in Angleton — if you were born during the 50’s, ‘60s or‘70s in Angleton, Texas, chances are good he brought you into the world. Faye Brown was a remarkable person as well. Her tireless work in the community included supporting the creation of a new county library. They instilled in Michael a love of people and a love of life. With every step of his life, Mike forged lifelong friendships along the way — from Scott Vaughn, a classmate in the third grade, to Bob Hibbert at Bowen Tool Company, his first job out of college.
Mike graduated from Angleton High School in 1974 and received a Bachelor of Arts in Journalism from Texas State University in San Marcos, Texas, in 1978. He moved to Houston soon afterwards and began his nearly 40-year career in the oil, gas, and petrochemical industry.
From 1979 to 1996, Mike held managerial positions in advertising and corporate communications at Bowen Tool Company, Big Three Industries, and Air Liquide America Corporation. During his tenure at Bowen, he produced an award-winning advertising campaign. For the next nine years, Mike and his friend Chuck Fuller were managing partners of Brown and Fuller Marketing Consultants, a full-service business-to-business marketing, advertising, and corporate communications firm. After Mr. Fuller’s retirement in 2005, Mike accepted the position of marketing director at Logan Oil Tools, which at the time was a start-up company that specialized in oilfield and intervention tools. Mike’s responsibilities as the director of marketing grew as the company grew and soon he was managing the marketing for Logan Oil Tools’ six sister companies under the corporate umbrella now known worldwide as Logan International. Through his extensive teambuilding experience and excellent interpersonal communication skills, Mike successfully led the corporation through a major rebranding effort in 2011 — a campaign of which he and the company were quite proud.
Mike was a member of NOMADS (an energy industry association) and the Business Marketing Association.
Michael’s favorite adventures included annual trips to Wimberley, Beeville, Baffin Bay, and Caney Creek where he and his friends hunted, fished, and shared a laugh. He squeezed every bit of fun and joy out of his 58 years of life and constantly shared this joy with his family and friends. He loved to make people laugh and when he was in the room there was laughter — lots of laughter. He was proud to say he never had an enemy.
Mike will especially be remembered by his family and friends for his never-ending patience; his upbeat, positive attitude (even up until the end); and his ability to make people laugh in any situation. Appreciative of his full life, Mike said shortly before his passing, “I’ve had more fun and affection than anyone in my 58 years.”
Michael expressed his appreciation for his friends at the Fellowship Hall, his many good friends who came by to visit, and his family, and thanked them all for their love and support.
Mike was preceded in death by his parents. Survivors include his sister, Lucy (Craig) Hilburn; and nieces Rebecca (Patrick) Newton and Rachel Hilburn, all of Texas; his brother Berry (Cindy) Brown of California; nieces Jordan and Kelsey Brown, Kelly Wright and Amanda Andrew of Colorado; great-niece Madelyn and a great-nephew on the way; and aunts, uncles, and cousins.
A memorial service is to be conducted at two o’clock in the afternoon on Friday, the 6th of June, in the Jasek Chapel of Geo. H. Lewis & Sons, 1010 Bering Drive in Houston, where Rev. Philip E. Grose, Pastor of Caring and Prayer at First United Methodist Church, Sugar Land, is to officiate. Friends are cordially to gather with the family and share remembrances of Mike during the hour prior to the service.
Immediately following the service, all are invited to greet the family during a reception in the adjacent grand foyer.
In lieu of customary remembrances, the family requests that memorial contributions be directed to the Kidney Cancer Association, PO Box 80338 #38269, Chicago IL 60680-3338, or made online at www.kidneycancer.org.
