

Michael John Hoffart, 92, a resident of Porter, Texas went to be with the Lord on Tuesday, May 10, 2016, in Woodville, Texas. He was born October 12, 1923 in Dobbin, Texas, son of Stash and Appolonia Gabriel Hoffart. A survivor of The Greatest Generation, he served his country in the Army during World War II. Mike was the patriarch of a large and loving family. A highly respected longshoreman for local ILA 24 for 38 years, his no-nonsense work ethic and tough character were unmatched and he motivated others to follow suit.
Loving husband to Ida Mattern for 71 years, the two were married at St. Mary's Church in Plantersville, Texas in 1945. Although he had only a seventh grade education, Mike maintained a sharp and brilliant mind until the end. He enjoyed socializing with family and friends, and had a reputation for being a champion domino player at the Union Hall for at least 20 years. His passing has left a huge void with those who loved him.
Mike is survived by his beloved wife Ida Hoffart, daughter Shirley Slaughter and husband James, son Michael Hoffart and wife Diane, daughter Carolyn Hustus, daughter Patsy Perry and husband Benny, and son Steve Hoffart and wife Debbie; grandchildren: Tammy Courtney, Charolette Mills, Chuck Hoffart, Bubba Perry, J.D. Slaughter, Brian Hoffart, Wendy Price, Tina Bowers, Josh Hoffart, Crystal Bassett, Tricia Leeves, Stash Hoffart, Stevie Hoffart, Katie Hustus, and associated spouses; 39 great-grandchildren and 16 great-great-grandchildren; brother Chris Hoffart and sister Betty Jean Kerr.
Visitation will be held from 5 to 7pm on Monday, May 16 2016, at Brookside Funeral Home, followed by a Rosary at 7pm. Funeral service will be held at 10am on Tuesday, May 17, with interment immediately following at Brookside Memorial Park. There will be a reception following burial at Brookside Funeral Home.
