Michael George Manthos, 78, a life-long Houston area resident, beloved son, father, brother, uncle, granddad, was called to his heavenly home on March 17th. Mike was born on February 16, 1948 in Houston, the middle child and only son of George and Nora Manthos. Mike proudly attained the level of Eagle Scout. He graduated from Jesse H. Jones High School and attended the University of Houston where he earned a bachelor’s degree in accounting. Mike served his country as a member of the National Guard stationed in Texas. He was a Certified Public Accountant with a distinguished career that spanned more than 40 years that included leadership positions at Volvo, Stewart & Stevenson and S&B Engineering.
Mike was an avid sports enthusiast, especially football, baseball, and golf. But more than anything else, Mike loved his family. He was most proud of his sons Gery and George and the good, strong men they became. Mike set the high standard for fatherhood that his sons emulated.
Mike was known for telling corny jokes that always got a few eye rolls and a lot of laughs. He enjoyed a good cigar with his brother-in-law Val Aldred on many occasions, and watching vintage airplanes at the local airshow with John Clark, his other brother-in-law. He also deeply loved his grandchildren, nieces and nephew. Mike was always there when his family needed him, most notably when he welcomed his mom to live out her life in his home.
Mike is preceded in death by his parents, George in 1982 and Nora in 2000 and his aunt, Mary Olga Manthos Nash in 1973. He is survived by his sons, Gery Glenn Manthos and wife Stacy, and their children Emma and Sarah; and George Michael Manthos and wife Kris, and their children Wren and Sydney; his sisters Mary Clark and husband John, and children Mona Kay Reeves and husband Derek Gaj, and Michael Marlar; and Linda Aldred and husband Val and their children Kelly Aldred, Christy Fuller and her husband Russell and their children Gavin, Gage and Garrison; and Casey Aldred.
