Michael Anthony Parsons aka Mike/Mikey/Granddad/HGD (Houston Grandad) passed away at the age of 77 in Austin, Texas on June 26, 2024 after a courageous battle with FTD. While Mike was known for many things, he was best known for being an incredible grandfather and serving as the patriarch for the extended Parsons family regularly planning family reunions and just keeping the family together. Mike loved his family and was devoted to his Catholic faith.
Mike was born in Mexico City, Mexico to Theron Edward and Mary Alice Parsons II. And throughout his life, Mike let everyone know he was a true Mexican. The 5th son of 7 boys, Mike was known to have caused a little bit of anxiety for his parents growing up. Once the family moved to the United States, Mike fought with his parents to even learn English but ultimately did. The family moved to West University where Mike spent the majority of his childhood. He attended St Vincent de Paul Catholic School then Marian High School before earning his Bachelor’s Degree in Economics from the University of St. Thomas. Mike served as a medic reserve in the Army stateside and spent most of his professional career in the oil business with a large part of that being with Schlumberger. When Mike wasn’t working, which he did quite a bit until his retirement, he enjoyed his time of the golf course at Fort Bend Country Club or hunting wherever he could get on.
Mike and Elsie Parsons Biron together have three married children, Michael Anthony Parsons II (Tony) to Whitney, Margaret Anne Parsons McDonell (Peggy) to Michael, and Elizabeth Louise Parsons Diaz (Liz) to Adaid. And while he loved golf and hunting, on the top of his list to spend his time were his grandkids—MacKenna (Ethan), Michael, Peyton, William, Matthew, Hadley, Robert, Maggie, and Michael Bennett. No matter the event or activity, Mike was always there, although he could be a little rough on the referees at times.
Mike retired in 1999 at the age of 52. In his retirement, Mike got involved in local Fort Bend County politics and was an active member of both Holy Rosary Catholic Church and the Knights of Columbus.
Mike was preceded in death by his parents as well as his brothers Steven Paul Parsons, William Posey Parsons, and Thomas Lee Parsons. In addition to his children and grandchildren, Mike is survived by his brothers Theron Edward Parsons III (Shirley), Robert Carroll Parsons, and David Day Parsons; sisters-in-law Judy Parsons and Kim Parsons; and countless nieces, nephews, and other extended family.
A visitation will be held on July 2, 2024 starting at 6:00 pm at the Carol Takton Boardroom in Malloy Hall with a Rosary starting at 7:00 pm at the Chapel of St. Basil, both at the University of St. Thomas, 3800 Montrose Blvd., Houston, TX. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on July 3, 2024 at 10:00 am at St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church, 6800 Buffalo Speedway, Houston, TX with reception to follow.
In lieu of flowers, donations to The Association for Frontotemporal Degeneration (theaftd.org) in Mike’s name would be appreciated.
