Celebrating the Life of Morris “Bud” Surnson
August 4, 1928 – March 7, 2026
Morris Surnson was, and remains, a beautiful soul. The purity of his heart allowed the light of love to shine through to everyone, all the way until he went home on March 7, 2026. His generosity was endless and he always gave to those in need. His humor was legendary.
Born in Houston, Texas, on August 4, 1928, Morris’s life was marked by strength from the very beginning. Though his father passed away before he was born, Morris grew up enveloped in the love of a doting mother, a protective big brother, and sisters and uncles who shaped him into the man he became. He spent his youth between Houston and Edna, Texas, eventually graduating from St. Thomas High School in Houston in 1946.
A proud veteran, Morris served in the very valuable role of radio technician in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict. Following his honorable discharge in 1952, he embarked on a dedicated 30-year career with Southwestern Bell. He climbed the ranks to become a manager in engineering, retiring in 1981 with a reputation for hard work and integrity.
Beyond his professional success, Morris was a gifted artist who saw the world through a lens of creativity and joy. His home was a gallery of his own making, filled with paintings and cartoons. He was known for his "on-demand" drawings for children, his work illustrating telephone and coloring books, and the art classes he taught to little ones. For Morris, art wasn't just a hobby, it was another way to give to others.
His compassion was also famously extended to his devoted little companions. A dedicated animal lover, Morris rescued many cats, dogs and even baby opossums over the years, ensuring they always had a safe, loving home with him. To Morris, providing sanctuary for these animals was a natural extension of his generous spirit.
Throughout Morris’s adult life, he was a devoted Catholic and a longtime member of St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church, where his faith and community were central to his journey.
Morris was the cornerstone of his family, a pillar of resilience who navigated life’s losses—including his beloved wife, Eugenia, and his siblings, Charles, Odelia, and Odell—with grace.
His love lives on through his children, Anne Marie Surnson and Lawrence Surnson, and his five grandsons: Drew, Zachary, Anthony, David, and Bradley. His three nieces, Pam, Debra and Kathy, brought fun, desserts and love every time they visited. To his family, he was more than a father and grandfather; he was "Dad," "Papaw," and "Uncle Bud"—a true friend, and a constant source of devotion and laughter.
The family wishes to express their deepest gratitude to Star of Texas Hospice and Nurse Next Door. Special thanks are extended to the caring hearts who walked this final journey with him: Dunia, Savannah, Remi, Miriam, his nurse Wisca, and his aide and friend Tyesha. A heartfelt thank you goes to Keke, who was by his side until the very end.
Family and friends are invited to celebrate Morris’s life during the following services:
