

Dorothy Louise Jennings was born March 12, 1929, to Jessie and Inez Butler in Hearne Texas. She spent the first years of her life in Hearne, Texas. Dorothy attended Blackshear Elementary School, Jack Yates High School and Texas Southern University. Dorothy’s favorite actress was Della Street on Perry Mason, who inspired her to go to a college for girls to learn typing and shorthand. (That’s before computers). In 1977, she attended ElCamino College in California where she received a degree in Education. She taught school at Whelean Elementary (where she taught ESL) and Leuzenger High School (where she taught Office Practice) for 22 + years before retirement. Dorothy accepted Christ in her life at an early age. The family attended Old Elam Baptist under the leadership of Rev.E. A. Ayers. In 1935, at the age of six she was baptized in the Brazos River by Rev. E. A. Ayers. The family moved to Houston, Texas and remained committed to the Word of God throughout the remainder of their lives.
Dorothy was a member of Sunshine Baptist Church under the leadership of the late Rev. W. D. Banks (her father) where she served until 1970. In 1970, she united her membership with New Mt. Carmel Baptist Church under the leadership of the late Rev.C. A. Berry (her brother−in−law). In 1974, she moved to Los Angeles, California and continued her Christian walk at Greater Ebenezer Missionary Baptist Church, under the leadership of the late Rev. A. W. Lott. After the death of Rev. A. W. Lott she moved her membership and became a warrior for Christ at Mt. Tabor Missionary Baptist Church under the leadership of the late Rev. E. E. Stafford. Dorothy remained a faithful member under the leadership of Rev. Ticey Brown for 30+ years until she moved back to Texas. On December 2018, she moved back to Texas and became a member of New Mt. Carmel Baptist Church under the leadership of Pastor Harrell R. Berry (Nephew) where she remained faithful until God called her home to her reward.
Dorothy was a Sunday School Teacher and a good leader and a good follower. She served on many axillaries in the church such as Usher Board, Choir and Women’s Ministry. Her favorite song was “In the Garden” her scriptures was Hebrew 12:1−5 and II Timothy 4:7−8. She loved to talk about the Lord no matter where she was. She never met a stranger. She really enjoyed a good holly ghost fire church service. Dorothy was one of the most generous caring and sharing person you would ever know. Dorothy had an open door policy, if you needed a place to lay your head, gripe, vent, hide outcry, get a good tongue lashing, a good meal, bible lesson and good advice and more you could go to Mother’s house with no questions asked. She enjoyed life to the fullest. She always had a joke because she loved laughing. She was always traveling to somewhere. She’s been to every state you could name some of them twice, her favorite was Hawaii (13 times) and to some country’s including Korea, Argentina, Fiji, Paris, London and Australia, that just some of the places. You say travel she said her middle name is “lets go”. What a wonderful extraordinary women she was.
Preceded her in death: her mother and father Jessie and Inez Butler; three daughters, Evelyn Moore, Dorothy Desmeuchet (BB), Carol Schwalbe; son, George Mayhorn (Ronnie). On Sunday, October 6, 2019, Dorothy Jennings (mother) transitioned from her earthly home into the hands of God. She leaves to cherish her memory one sister, Jessie M. Berry; son−grandson, Rodney Desmeuchet (Sherritta) of Rancho Cucamonga, California; four daughters, Linda Kelley (Johnnie), Beverly Manderson (Lorenzo), Inez Green (Herman), Diane Smith (baby girl), Victorville California; cousin, and Regina Clark (Jackie), Kansas City. She had a special bond with Yolanda Smith, Los Angeles California (granddaughter); Joey Smith (grandson), Victorville California; Cheryl Mayhorn (Daughter−in−law); George and Cheronie Mayhorn, Rancho Cucamonga, California; Megan Berry (niece), Deborah Berry (niece), Harrell D. Berry (nephew), Elder Keith Green (son), California, Rev.Keith Brown (son), California; Deacon Vincent Miles (Sunday School Teacher) California; most of all her nephew, Pastor Harrell R. Berry, a host of grandchildren, great−grandchildren, great great−grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins, and special friends.
