EDNA’S LIFE JOURNEY Written in her own words prior to her death… Edna Mae Battist was born on September 2, 1932, to the late Mildred Jackson and Frank Edward Jackson of Houston, Texas. She attended Ryan Elementary, E. O. Smith Jr. High and Phillis Wheatley High School. As a young adult she went to work to help her mother take care her sisters and brothers. At an early age she united with New Hope Baptist Church and was baptize under the leadership of Pastor L. T. Jackson. She was a faithful member, song in the youth choir, secretary of B.Y.P.U., and song with the adult choir. Later in life she met the man of her life, Joseph Battist, they were married 55 years, and to this union six children were born. She moved her membership to Old Pleasant Grove Baptist Church, under the leadership of Pastor A. A. McCardell, Sr. She was a faithful member, in Sunday School, Bible Study, Choir, Kitchen helper, Mission and Youth Drill Team. She stayed there for many years. As a family they attended church together and was active members. Edna was a hard worker, took sewing lessons, attended Security Academy and Firearm training school. She was employed with United Saving & Loan, Settegast Village and Walmart. Achievement: Best dressed Awards, Postal Service Certification. Sis. Battist joined Smyrna Missionary Baptist Church on June 9, 1991, under the leadership of Dr. Larry W. Jackson Sr., Pastor/Teacher. She was a faithful member and worked with the Pastor’s Aid, Choir, Greeter, and Senior’s Group, Active in Sunday School, Prayer Meeting, Bible Study and won 4 time 1st place trophy for Family & Friend’s Day. She loved her church family and her Pastor. She was preceded in death by her parents; Mildred & Frank Edward Jackson, husband-Joseph Battist, Four brothers, Willie, Alvin, Manuel & David, One sister, Maxine Carter. She leaves to cherish her memory. Three daughters; Exixie Rice (Jeff), Dexixie Neal (Reginald) & Qali Jones (Richard), Three sons; Lonnie Battist (Roxanne), Willie Battist (June), Rennie Battist, Sr. (LaJune), one stepson, Jimmy Battist (Alese); four sisters, Geraldine, Annie Bell, Gwendolyn, LaVern; one brother, Billie all from Houston, Texas, and a host of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
