Muoi Tran, 86, of Houston, Texas, passed away surrounded by her family on Sunday, October 4th, 2026. Muoi was born in Bac Lieu, Vietnam, on April 6th, 1940, to Tai Tran and Nguyet Ly, both of whom emigrated from China to Vietnam. She was married to Con Co Vuong.
After her husband died, Muoi lived with her mother-in-law and helped run a produce stand at Binh Tay Market while raising three young children, ages 6, 3, and 1. After the Fall of Saigon, Muoi and her children moved back to their old home, where she briefly raised caged chickens. She made a living selling merchandise outside the Market. Government officials frequently chased vendors away and seized their goods, making it difficult to earn an income.
Her son, Huy, was the first to leave Vietnam. Muoi and her two daughters, Anh and Lien, followed in November of 1978 aboard the Tung An. After spending several months aboard the freighter anchored in the Philippines, they were transferred to a refugee camp in Manila to complete the sponsorship process initiated by Huy. They arrived in America in August 1979.
In America, Muoi worked as a kitchen helper at a Chinese restaurant. When her children started their own families, she helped raise and care for her grandchildren in Monterey Park, New York City, and Houston. In between, she was a beloved live-in nanny.
One of Muoi’s favorite things was traveling, especially with family and friends. She explored various parts of the U.S., including San Francisco, Boston, Yosemite, St. Thomas, and Hawaii. She wasn’t just limited to domestic travel. Muoi traveled all over the world, from Australia and Thailand to Sweden and Italy. She even returned to Vietnam and visited China. She also partook in many cruises with friends and her daughter, Anh. She loved to cook for family and friends and made many quilts.
Muoi was preceded in death by her parents, Tai Tran and Nguyet Ly; her husband Con Co Vuong; her sister Kinh Chau; her brother Quoc Tran; and her granddaughter Loan. She is survived by her son, Huy Vuong of Houston, Texas; her two daughters, Anh (Vuong) Manochi of Los Angeles, California, and Lien (Vuong) Little of Houston, Texas; and her grandchildren Anh, Helen, Clayton, Donna, Kevin, and Steven.
Even though Muoi has moved on to a better place, she will be remembered for her perseverance and hard work through trials and tribulations. No matter what life threw at her, she would face it head-on. Not only did she raise her children as a single mother, but she also helped raise the next generation. Her memory lives on in her children, grandchildren, and friends.
