

On April 1, 1923 sister Muriel L. Murray was born in Houston’s Third Ward to James Arthur McGowan and Bessie Lee McGowan. She attended Blackshear Elementary and Jack Yates High School.
After high school she worked at several different jobs. In 1947 she met and married Mr. James Lee Murray. They were the parents of two girls and three boys.
In 1948 Sister Murray joined Fourth Missionary Baptist church and was baptized under the leadership of Rev. E. Stanley Branch where she worshipped until she moved to Acres Homes. She joined Progressive Missionary Baptist Church in 1960 under the leadership of Rev. B. J. Lewis and continued faithfully with Rev. Raymond H. Hillis Pastor.
Sister Murray was employed at Aldine Independent School district where she worked as a Teacher’s Aide for special needs children for twenty one years. She retired in 1988. After retirement she began volunteering her time at the Acres Home Multi Purpose Center. She worked with ACORN and was a member of Eastern Stars Chapter #59. She served as financial secretary of the Acres Homes Housewives Charity Club.
She was an active member of Progressive Missionary Baptist Church. She participated in Senior Choir, Mission Chorus, President and Assistant Teacher-Deborah Circle, and Sunday School, Bible School and Elegant Elders for many years.
