Murl Danna passed away peacefully surrounded by her family on Sunday, July 3, 2022. Murl was born on November 6, 1930, in Trout, Louisiana to Lela Jane and Woody Newman. She grew up in East Texas with her five older siblings – Ross Walker, Nina Faye Ward, Edith Fitts, Woody Newman Jr., and L.J.Newman. After graduating from Rusk High School, Murl moved to Houston and began working at First National Bank and later, Reagan State Bank. On February 14, 1954, Murl married the love of her life, Charles Danna, at Christ the King Church. Charles and Murl welcomed three beautiful children. Together, the family spent many weekends fishing and crabbing in Bayou Vista. Murl loved to fish, but she didn’t bait the hook or take the fish off when she caught them, that was for Charles or the kids to do. After she retired from Handi-Ad, Charles and Murl began traveling. She loved to cruise all over the world, but her favorite traveling included a casino bus to Coushatta, Louisiana, where you could always find her on a Blackjack table! Charles and Murl also traveled around the U.S. with their golf group. During the day, Charles played golf while Murl would shop. In the evenings, they were part of the hospitality bunch where there was plenty of good food, drinks, and laughter.
Murl was a loving and devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. She was known to many by her favorite title of all, “Nanny .” In addition to spending time with family and friends, she loved dancing, playing pitch, and watching her favorite baseball team, the Houston Astros. Murl also enjoyed watching her grandkids and great-grandkids play football, basketball, softball, and baseball. It didn’t matter how hot or cold it was outside, you could always find Nanny front and center, cheering from the stands. Murl was also an excellent cook who was famous for her cucuzza, banana pudding, and cornbread dressing.
