Nancy Carroll Derrick, of Houston, Texas, passed away peacefully on March 26, 2015. Born October 23, 1929 in Cleveland, Ohio to Martha and Norman Tischler. As a young girl on the shores of lake Erie, she taught herself to sail and was a fierce competitor. She continued to pursue her love of sailing after moving to Texas. She spent many weekends at the Houston Yacht Club and installed the love of open water in her children. Throughout her life she developed many interests and talents about which she was passionate. Nancy was an accomplished artist and spent many hours painting, mostly the seashore. She had a keen sense of design and embraced all types of eclectic art, interiors and fashion. Nancy loved a good competition, woe be the opponent across the table in a game of bridge or along the sharp point of her foil in a fencing match. During her later years she was known as the "jigsaw puzzle queen" because of a real talent for not only completing intricate and elaborate puzzles, but in record time. She was a news aficionado and loved to debate local as well as national politics. Nancy also had an interest in the stock market and enjoyed studying the trends on both the bull and bear markets. She was never shy about expressing her thoughts or opinions, and that tenacious spirit and determination kept her active until the very end. She pursued careers in real estate, brokering businesses and working for Spring Branch ISD, but above all else Nancy loved her children and will be sorely missed. Nancy is survived by her four children, Rob Derrick and wife, Cathy, Leslie Derrick, Shelby Kane and husband, Frank, Mitch Derrick and wife, Danielle; six grandchildren, Ashley, Lauren, Robby, Jake, Jazzlynn and Dustin; her younger sister, Lassie Eicher and husband, Mike and their daughters, Ardith and Tish. The family wishes to extend a special thank you to the caring staff at Atria Westchase and for the compassionate care provided by Brookdale Hospice.
In lieu of flowers the family requests donations be made in her name to the Myositis Association at Myositis.org. or 1737 King Street, Ste. 600 Alexandria, VA 22314
Services will be held Friday April 10th, George H. Lewis Funeral home, 1010 Bering Dr. Houston, Texas 77057 at 2:00 pm.
