Nancy Wright Fisher died peacefully in Houston, Texas, on Thursday, the 9th of July 2026, at the age of 86. As a fourth-generation native Houstonian, she was born at the old St. Joseph’s Hospital on the 30th of May 1940.
Her parents were Bess and Knox Wright, and Nancy grew up sharing in her parents’ activities in Houston, including drinking lemonade and eating peanuts at the Turn Verein social club. One of the early photographs of Nancy is of her as a toddler, talking on the phone. For her entire life, she loved talking on the telephone with her friends, catching up on all the news.
Nancy graduated from The Hockaday School in Dallas, and she attended The University of Texas at Austin, where she joined Alpha Chi Omega Sorority. In 1958, she met Nelson Fisher on a blind date, and they were married at St. John the Divine Episcopal Church in Houston on the 23rd of September 1961. From his days at The University of Houston, Nelson was a member of Sigma Chi Fraternity. Many of Nancy and Nelson’s lifelong friends originated from those Sigma Chi connections.
In 1963, Nancy and Nelson moved to a house on Pebblebrook Drive in the Memorial area, where they raised their sons, Jeff and David. At that house, when Jeff and David were teenagers, their high school friends loved coming over to hang out; Nancy was always ready to serve up queso, homemade brownies, or chicken broccoli casserole.
Nancy volunteered at her sons’ schools, especially Bunker Hill Elementary School, where she served as the President of the PTA. While her sons were teenagers, Nancy worked as the school secretary at Spring Branch Junior High School, and she loved her friendships with the faculty and staff there.
As a devoted Episcopalian, Nancy was an active member of Holy Spirit Episcopal Church in Houston for 60 years, where she volunteered in many capacities. One of her favorite things to do at church was to plan the receptions following the ordinations of new priests. On a wider church level, she served for many years as a delegate to the annual Council meeting of the Episcopal Diocese of Texas, as well as on the diocesan Board of the Episcopal Church Women.
Fortunately, Nancy’s recipe box is still in use by family members, for favorites such as lemon ice box pie, Reuben sandwiches, German potato salad, and Texas sheet cake. The most coveted recipe is for her apple cake, which she would bake up in multiple loaf pans each Christmas as gifts for friends and neighbors.
Nancy is predeceased by her husband, Nelson Augustus Fisher; her mother, Bessie Mae Sternenberg Wright; her father, Knox Elroy Wright; and her sister, Betty Wright Sterquell.
She is survived by her sons, The Right Reverend Jeff Wright Fisher and his wife Susan, and David Nelson Fisher and his wife Amanda. She is also survived by her beloved grandchildren, Scott Stephenson Fisher, John Wright Fisher, Elizabeth Wright Fisher, and Vivian Margaret Fisher.
A funeral service is to be conducted at ten o’clock in the morning on Thursday, the 16th of July 2026, at Holy Spirit Episcopal Church, 12535 Perthshire Road in Houston, with The Reverend Mitchell Tollett, The Reverend Michael Sturdy, and The Rev. William Fowler officiating, and The Reverend Mary Berger Davis preaching.
Immediately following, all are invited to greet the family at a reception in the nearby Palmer Hall.
The interment will follow, via escorted cortege, at Glenwood Cemetery in Houston.
In lieu of customary remembrances, the family requests with gratitude that memorial contributions in Mrs. Fisher’s name be directed to the Holy Spirit Episcopal Church Endowment Fund, 12535 Perthshire Rd., Houston, TX, 77024, or online at
