Her husband, Richard preceded her in death. She is survived by son Richard, daughters Laura and Lynn, and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She lived a full and remarkable life. Nan had many interests, a variety of experiences, and a chance to travel the world. Her relationships with her family and friends were her most valued treasure.
She was a lifetime servant of our Lord, Jesus Christ. Nan devoted herself every day and, in every way, to assist with her time, talent as well as her treasure, a number of causes and non-profits. Among these were the Houston Grand Opera (lifetime board member), Houston Museum of Fine Arts (former board member and committee chair), Houston Symphony, Moores School of Music, and Shepard School of Music.
She was comfortable as a board member or working as a volunteer on kitchen duty for an event at the church, taking tickets at a fundraiser, or answering the phone in the early days of HGO.
Her main passion was the church where she became a teacher/trainer for those volunteers wishing to work in early childhood development classrooms. Her family knew she was headed out on the road to conduct a seminar when she loaded her old portable typewriter, rotary phone, and other teaching tools in the trunk of her car.
Those who met her and those that knew her recall how she lit up a room when she entered. Everyone was a friend, regardless of religion, color, race or background. She instilled this feeling in everyone, reminding her children on occasion to remember who we were and to conduct ourselves accordingly. Honesty and love were meant for everyone. She will always be remembered as someone who lived her life with unending joy and much gratitude for the blessings she received.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, August 16th at 11:00 am at St. Phillips Presbyterian Church located at 4807 San Felipe, Houston 77056.
In lieu of flowers the family ask that a donation be made in Nan’s name to St. Phillips.
