Nena Aqueelah Coleman Smith transitioned to Heaven on September 5, 2025. As we gather to celebrate her extraordinary life, we invite you to join us in honoring her legacy and supporting her family during this time.
About Nena
Born in Austin, Texas to Gladys Vanessa Pinkard and Donald Ray Coleman, Nena was a light in every life she touched. Her presence was powerful, her spirit unshakable, and her love unconditional.
She is survived by her husband, Andre Lee Smith, and their three cherished sons: Eli-King Lee Smith, Ali-Moses Lee Smith, and Judah Dre-Lee Smith.
She is also lovingly remembered by her sisters: Essi Eargle (and husband, Gary), Saranda Jefferson (and husband, Tracey), Donna Coleman, Jessica Woods, Vanessa Woods, and Katrina Woods.
Nena was a proud graduate of Lyndon B. Johnson High School in Austin, Texas (Class of 1998). She earned a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from Prairie View A&M University in 2003, followed by her Master’s degree in Human Resources. She made Houston her lifelong home—where she raised her family, built her career, and touched countless lives.
A Life of Talent, Faith & Family
Nena’s passion for music was both a gift and a calling. Her journey began in childhood, singing in her mother’s choir at local Austin churches such as Willie Chapel and New Hope AME. Later, as a member of New Light Church under Dr. I.V. and Bridget Hilliard, she sang alto and soprano in the choir, sharing her gift with all who heard her. These early experiences shaped her faith, her voice, and her heart
As a young woman, she formed a singing group with her sisters Essi Eargle and Saranda Jefferson, blending their harmonies and sisterhood. In high school, Nena helped revitalize the step group Theta Phi Lyte by creating original choreography and reorganizing the group’s structure—breathing new life into it. Her creativity and leadership drew in new members, and the dances she created became a lasting part of the group’s legacy, passed down and performed by future generations. In college, she produced music with her cousin, who also shared her passion for music and production.
Nena went on to compete in American Idol and numerous local and national singing competitions, consistently captivating audiences with her powerful voice and warm stage presence.
But more than a singer, Nena was a phenomenal mother, a loyal sister, a cherished daughter, a devoted wife, and a proud child of God. A faithful Christian, she was baptized and lived her life with grace, prayer, and unwavering trust in the Lord.
And in true Nena fashion, we’re pretty sure she’s already joined the Heavenly Choir—leading the Altos and Sopranos, smiling wide, and filling Heaven with her signature sound.
