With heavy hearts, we are announcing that Mrs. Nery R. Arreola, 76 years of age, has lost her fight with stomach cancer. She passed away peacefully at home in Houston, Texas on Thursday, June 4th 2015.
Nery was born and raised by Vicente and Nery Ramos in Tampico, Tamaulipas, Mexico on August 24, 1938; she was the third of seven children. After a short engagement, she married the love of her life, Delfino R. Arreola on July 1, 1960. The couple began their new adventure in Chicago, IL that included learning a new language, residing in a new country, starting a family, and learning how to run a household. In the year 1973, another milestone in her life was making the move with her new family to Houston, TX.
Nery’s home was always open to all and without hesitation; she always had food on the table or a place of rest for someone in need. Because of her kindness and generosity, her home became the unofficial place for her children’s friends’ to meet. Many of these friends would grow up knowing the joys of a warm flour tortilla with butter, and she would always refer to them as “her kids”. Each and every day she would say a prayer for all “her kids” that they may have happiness and wellbeing in their lives. Even during her final days of her life, she asked and talked about all of those who grew up around her. Although unable to continue with her education, she was always willing to try or learn something new; she was a very intelligent and wise woman with quick wit and great sense of humor. She loved to laugh, and enjoy herself with friends and family, regardless of the moment or occasion. She had many hobbies that she truly enjoyed such as gardening, sewing, crocheting and her love of baking. She was not a very big sports fan, but she enjoyed watching the Super Bowl, Indy 500, drag racing, the occasional soccer game, and most of all, she loved watching hockey.
Her greatest pride was having raised 4 children successfully to adulthood and watching them start families of their own. She was very proud of them all, and prouder still when her grandchildren were born. She had no regrets, as she had lived a very happy and fulfilling life.
She is survived by her children, Marcos Antonio Arreola, Steven Arreola and his wife Michelle Campo, Nery Arlene Smiley and her husband Matthew Smiley, Yvette Berg and her husband John Berg III. She is also survived by her Grandchildren, Colin C.L. MacGregor, Finley Beckett Smiley, John William Berg IV, Justin Del Berg and Lauren Kasey Berg. She is also survived by her Brother Antonio Ramos, her Sisters Bertha-Alicia R. Fragoso, Alba R. Duran, and Laura R. Ortiz.
She is preceded in death by her husband Delfino R. Arreola, her brother Tito Ramos, and her sister Genobeba R. Diaz, her brother in law Carlos Duran and nephew Sammy Hernandez.
Services are to be held at American Heritage Funeral Home. A viewing and rosary is to be held on June 14, 2015 between the hours of 5 and 8 p.m. with the rosary to be read at 7p.m. The Funeral service is to be held on June 15, 2015 at 8:45 a.m. and to last no later than 9:45 a.m. followed by the gravesite blessing where she will be laid to rest, by her husband’s side at the Veterans Administration Cemetery.
The best way to remember her would be to always think of these three words:
LAUGH, LIVE, LOVE!
We’d like to thank all those who lent support, aide and the occasional shoulder to lean on throughout this whole process, Thank you!
