entered eternal rest on Sunday March 21,2021 at home surrounded by her family.
Nora was born in Kinder, Louisiana on August 24 ,1940. She was the third daughter of Wilford and Margie Lee Francis of Port Arthur, Texas. Nora lived her early years in Port Arthur and graduated from Abraham Lincoln High School in 1958. Nora was always proud of her time in high school where she was a Majorette for the Bumble Bees. She also liked to point herself out in a yearbook picture, as part of the swim team but, it was never verified she could actually swim. Before leaving Port Arthur to live in Houston, Texas, Nora worked for St Mary’s Hospital.
Nora and Kellon Jones her husband of 42 years moved to Bowie, Maryland in 1968.
She was employed by Safeway, Inc for 17 years. In 1991 she and her husband moved to Missouri City, Texas for retirement. They purchased their home and joined Missouri City Baptist Church under the leadership of Dr. Dennis W Young. She was an active member for several years until her health started to fail.
Nora loved her Texas roots and while in Maryland was an active member of the Port Arthur Alumni Association. She loved all things Port Arthur especially the cuisine which she spent years trying to replicate and perfect. She was known to make the best potato salad of anyone in the family. She and Kellon would always Bar B Q on special occasions and you were lucky if you were able to get a plate of ribs, brisket, links and potato salad. Nora also lay claim to the best gumbo, but that is still being disputed!
Nora went by ”Mrs. Jones”, “Aunt No”, and “No” to family and friends. She was very particular about personal hygiene and always instructed you to wash your hands before you got involved in her kitchen. She had no problem giving corrections on your appearance, speech or etiquette, sometimes making comments that could sting.
Nora was preceded in death by her husband, Kellon, her parents, sisters; Maeceola Payne (Mae) and Carolyn Harris (Cat). She leaves to cherish her memory her sons; Harold Sylvia, of Upper Marlboro, Maryland and Derrick Sylvia, Missouri City, Texas, her sister Ola Mae Manager, of Phoenix, Arizona.
She also leaves her nieces; Nicole Brown of Katy, Texas, Angelina Smith (George) of Richmond, Texas, Andrea Johnson, Hope Payne, Faith Payne, Lynn Rollins of Port Arthur, Texas and Patricia Clinkscale of Marietta, Georgia, nephews; Gary Tanner (Rachel) of Katy, Texas, Eric Payne (Zenobia) and Leo Garrett (Sandra) of Port Arthur, Texas, as well as a special cousin James Green of Port Arthur, Texas.
