Norman (Norm) Lee Stiffler passed away on May 12, 2025 at his residence at the Village at River Oaks in Houston, Texas. Norman was born on July 2, 1941 in Mingus, Texas to Ernest and Charlotte Stiffler where he was raised. He graduated from Gordon High School in 1960. He married and moved to Abilene with Katherine Stiffler, his wife of 40 years, to attend college where he earned a business degree from Hardin Simmons University and served in the National Guard from 1965-1970.
Norm started his career as a claims representative with State Farm. He later moved to Temple, then to Waco with Katherine (Kay), where he opened his own agency with Farmers Insurance. In 1989, he left the agency and took on the role of District Manager for Farmers in the Dallas area, where he oversaw agents in his district until retirement. Norm lived in Dallas until 2020 when he moved to Houston to be closer to family.
Norm enjoyed golfing, spending time with family and friends, rooting for his favorite sports teams, and traveling for work. He appreciated the beauty of plants and flowers, beautiful landscapes, a few daily cups of coffee, and good food (especially sweet treats). He cherished the company of the vast network of Farmers Insurance agents that he had developed strong relationships with during his tenure as District Manager. He was known for striking up a friendly conversation with toll booth operators at the airport, hotel workers, grocery store clerks, and many strangers whom he encountered. Some referred to him jokingly as “Stormin’ Norman,” for his impatient nature and determined drive.
In the last decade, Norman confronted chronic illness with fortitude and a strong constitution. Though he was in much discomfort, he dealt with these chronic conditions with a lot of bravery and humor.
Norman is survived by his former wife, Kay Stiffler of Houston, his older brother, Edward Stiffler of Arlington, his eldest daughter Shana Balaguera and her husband Henri of Boston, MA, and grandchildren, Read and his wife Olivia, Riley and James Tatum of Houston Texas; his youngest daughter Lee Stiffler-Meyer, his son-in-law, Kevin Meyer, and his grandchildren Levi, Lucy and Georgia Meyer of Edgewater, Colorado. Norman also leaves an extended network of family and cherished friendships throughout Texas.
A celebration of life will be held on Saturday, June 21, 2025 at 10:30am-12:30pm at Communion Neighborhood Cooperative; 514 Lockwood Dr, Richardson, TX 75080. Light refreshments will be served, and friends and loved ones are encouraged to share memories of Norman.
