Olga was a devoted mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, aunt, cousin, and friend to many. As the oldest of six children, she experienced hardship early in life after losing her mother, Tomasita Galvan, at a young age. Those difficult years taught her strength, resilience, and the importance of caring for family—lessons she carried with her throughout her life.
Her Catholic faith was the foundation of who she was. Olga lived a life devoted to God, Jesus Christ, the Virgin Mary, and the Holy Spirit. Praying the rosary every night on her knees before bed was a sacred ritual she remained faithful to until the very end. She made sure her children attended church regularly and passed on the values of faith, love, and devotion to her family.
As a young woman, Olga worked on her family’s farm before later working at Cigarrera La Moderna in Monterrey, Nuevo León, where she met her husband, Francisco Guadalupe Campos. Together, they moved to Chicago, Illinois, where they began their family and welcomed three daughters while working in restaurants.
In 1968, Olga and Francisco made Houston, Texas their home. There, she built a strong foundation centered on faith, family, and friendship. One of the first things she did after arriving in Houston was find a church home at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church on Navigation Boulevard, where she worshipped for many years. In Houston, the family continued to grow with the birth of their son.
Olga worked many jobs throughout her life, always doing whatever was necessary to provide for her family. She first worked at a restaurant owned by relatives on her mother’s side of the family. During the 1970s, she worked at Houston’s only Spanish-speaking drive-in on Jensen Drive called “The Epson,” a job she especially loved because her children could accompany her every night, enjoying the free daycare, entertainment, and concessions. She also worked for the City of Houston at George Bush Intercontinental Airport, served as a cook for Aldine ISD, and worked at Church’s Chicken. Before retiring, Olga became well known for her famously delicious tamales, which she lovingly referred to as her “casino money.”
Olga loved traveling and especially enjoyed visiting casinos, particularly in Las Vegas, often taking advantage of her flight benefits to explore new places.
More than anything, Olga cherished her family. Her homemade flour tortillas and tamales became treasured memories for her grandchildren. She would have them line up single file as she spread butter on each fresh tortilla, rolled it up, and handed it to them before they happily returned to the back of the line for another. The cycle continued until either the children were full or she ran out of dough.
She lovingly rocked every grandchild to sleep while singing Spanish lullabies, especially when they were sick or needed comfort. When Olga looked at her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, the love in her eyes was unmistakable. She treasured each one deeply and made every person around her feel cared for, welcomed, and loved.
