Peggy Sharon Chastain, 79, of Houston, Texas, passed away peacefully and unexpectedly on July 10, 2025, in the comfort of her daughter’s home — just four days after celebrating her birthday, surrounded by love.
Peggy was born in Clinton, Missouri, on July 6, 1946, to Kenneth and Dorothy Chastain, whom she honored and adored throughout her life. She grew up in Sedalia, Missouri, where she attended Smith-Cotton High School, and later graduated from Southwest Baptist University in Bolivar, where she studied elementary education.
She is survived by her son, Lance Wallace, his wife Lana, and their children Kendall and Chase; and by her daughter, Heather Gunn, her husband Brandon, and their daughters Emma and Scarlett. To her grandchildren, she was “Nanny” and “Nini” — roles she cherished more than anything in the world. She is also lovingly remembered by her niece Amy Anderson (and husband David) and nephew Jay Chastain, as well as her beloved great-nieces, who also brought her immense joy. Peggy was preceded in death by her parents, her brother Larry Chastain and his wife Suzanne.
Peggy made her home in both Kansas City and Houston over the years, moving to Kansas City in 2011 to be close to her mother and brother, who she helped care for during their later years, which she did with joy. She had recently returned to Houston to be with her children and grandchildren, who were the very heart of her world.
A woman of deep faith, Peggy lived her life in service to her family, friends and others, including her elementary school students during her career as a teacher. She found joy in the little things — sewing outfits for Heather and her dolls, making her famous tuna casserole, lasagna and Texas sheet cake, and keeping a warm, inviting home where all felt welcome. Her kitchen was filled with an overabundance of comfort food, especially during holidays, including her homemade rolls and noodles, which she made with love and served with generosity. She had a particular talent and eye for style and beauty, whether she was styling hair or makeup, selecting the perfect outfit for the occasion, or decorating her new apartment in Houston.
She was a proud member of her Sunday School class, a devout follower of Jesus, and a loyal fan of the Kansas City Chiefs (win or lose). “Got Any Rivers” was her favorite hymn, which she often sang to her children and grandchildren alike. She is notorious for ending every phone call with her children with the words, “I love you”.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, August 2nd at 2:30 PM at Memorial Oaks Funeral Home, 13001 Katy Freeway, Houston, TX 77079.
In honor of Peggy’s memory, the family invites donations to Samaritan’s Purse – Texas Flood Relief.
