Peggy Tanner Futrelle departed this world on August 7, 2018 after a long battle with dementia. Born in Canyon, Texas, this beloved only child of James Homer and Janie Dale Tanner was a quintessential Southern lady – well-mannered, welcoming, fiercely independent with a never-give-up attitude. For most of her years, Peggy called Houston “home,” and it is there where she met Clarence Neale Taylor, whom she married in 1959. Soon after their wedding came the birth of two boys, Neale and Gary. Sadly, Peggy lost Clarence to illness when the boys were very young, but she soon met and married a North Carolina gentleman, Emmett Earl Futrelle, with whom she shared life until his passing in 2012.
An accomplished homemaker who enjoyed cooking, decorating and gardening, Peggy loved playing hostess to family and friends, and even camping trips became more elegant and adventurous affairs under her guidance and direction! Peggy was an exceptional daughter who cared selflessly for her parents throughout the years, an amazing mother who was forever doting on her children, an energetic and engaged grandmother, and a loyal and trusted friend.
Peggy is survived by her son, Gary Dale Taylor, and his wife, Lynn; daughter-in-law, Sandy Taylor Laflin; stepdaughter Vivian Williamson and her husband, Mac; stepdaughter Ann Schuler and her husband, Michael; grandchildren Kelly Taylor, Jeffrey Taylor and Lindsey Taylor; step-grandchildren Kara Williamson, Tricia Williamson Paramore, Asher Schuler, Casi Schuler Barnas, Jeremy Schuler and Jennifer Schuler Nemoseck; several step-great grandchildren and countless friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, James Homer and Janie Dale Tanner; husbands Clarence Neale Taylor and Emmett Earl Futrelle; and son, Neale Homer Taylor.
A celebration of Peggy’s life will be held on Monday, August 13, 2018 at Memorial Oaks Funeral Home, 13001 Katy Freeway, Houston, TX 77079. Visitation will begin in the chapel at 10 AM, to be followed by a brief service at 10:30 AM and a light lunch reception at 11 AM. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations in Peggy’s memory be made to Memorial Drive United Methodist Church at 12955 Memorial Drive, Houston, TX 77079.
