Philip Ross Neuhaus, born on the 25th of December 1919, passed away on Tuesday morning, the 23rd of April 2013. A fifth generation Houstonian, Mr. Neuhaus was the son of Hugo Victor Neuhaus and Kate Padgitt Rice Neuhaus. As a child, he grew up in the Shadyside area of Houston and attended Miss Kinkaid’s School. In 1931 he was the King of the May Fete at Christ Church Cathedral. Later he graduated in 1938 from St. Mark’s School, Southborough, Massachusetts, and matriculated into Yale University, where he graduated in 1942. With World War II was underway, and Philip joined the U.S. 124th Horse Cavalry, first attending Officer Candidate School in Kansas at Ft. Riley; then being stationed in Texas at Ft. Russell in Marfa, Ft. Brown in Brownsville; and Ft. Ringold in Rio Grande City, Texas; and then being deployed to Burma and China. He left the service with the rank of Captain.
Mr. Neuhaus came from a lineage that helped shape the state of Texas. His great, great grandfather, Shapley P. Ross arrived in Texas in 1839 with wife, Catherine Fulkerson Ross and sons Peter F. Ross and Lawrence Sullivan “Sul” Ross. The father and both sons served as Texas Rangers, and both Peter and Sul distinguished themselves in service under Sam Houston’s administration. Peter F. Ross married Laura Harrison of Waco, the daughter General James E. Harrison. Another great grandfather, Frederick Rice, was the brother of William Marsh Rice who founded what was to become Rice University. Frederick Rice was married to Charlotte Baldwin Rice, who’s family was among the original founders of the city of Houston. Mr. Neuhaus’ paternal great grandfather arrived in Texas from Germany in 1846, settling in Lavaca County, and establishing one of the largest mercantile operations in the state outside of Galveston. In addition, Mr. Neuhaus mother, two aunts, and two other relatives were among the 15 founders of the St. John’s School in Houston.
In 1942 Mr. Neuhaus married Elizabeth Lacey Thompson, and, after the war, he moved to her home town of Cleveland, Ohio, working at National City Bank and McDonald and Co. Upon the death of his father 1947, Mr. Neuhaus returned to Texas to operate the investment firm Neuhaus & Company in conjunction with his brother, Joseph Rice Neuhaus. Neuhaus & Company merged with Milton R. Underwood & Company on the 1st of January 1948 to form Underwood, Neuhaus & Company. For forty years Underwood, Neuhaus & Company served the investment needs of the region as an independent investment firm. The business is currently known as Underwood, Neuhaus & Hardin, a division of Wells Fargo Advisors.
Mr. Neuhaus was active in the growth of the investment industry in the Southwest. He established the Houston Society of Financial Analysts in 1959 and served as its President. He was a member of the Securities Industry Association and served as Chairman of the Board of Governors for the Texas District; he served as the President of Houston Society of Financial Analysts; he served as Vice President and Director of the National Federation of Financial Analysts; and he served as President of the Stock and Bond Club of Houston.
In 1968, Mr. Neuhaus married Barbara Haden, and they enjoyed 39 years of marriage.
Always devoted to the community, Mr. Neuhaus served for many years on the boards of Julia C. Hester House, The Salvation Army, and Texas Children’s Hospital, the latter for over 40 years.
He was a member of the Bayou Club of Houston, the Houston Country Club, Allegro, Eagle Lake Rod & Gun Club, The Houston Club, and the Ramada Club.
Besides going to his office, he had found time in recent weeks to dine out with friends of all ages, who gave him great delight and beaten a younger champ at croquet and his daughter at gin rummy. He had been looking forward to participate in a fishing tournament and the next croquet tournament.
For many years, Philip Neuhaus, had felt fortunate to have the care of Dr. Marc Boom and his assistant Jill Kubesch, RN, as well as Dr. David Chiu, in whom he placed his utmost trust and found great enjoyment. To them, the care and wonderful cooking of Catalina Salazar, Mountain Valley Water, the joys of family and friends, and a love of the great outdoors, he gratefully attributed his great health and longevity.
Philip Neuhaus was preceded in death by his son, the late Philip Ross Neuhaus, Jr. and his wife Barbara Haden Neuhaus, and his step-daughter Barbara George Briner. He is survived by his children Lacey Neuhaus Dorn and husband, Dale “Tucker”; his daughter Elizabeth “Betts” Neuhaus Armstrong and husband, Charles Dudley “C.D.”; and his daughter Joan Neuhaus Schaan, as well as his grandchildren Lacey Neuhaus Dorn; Philip Prizer Armstrong; Katherine Neuhaus Armstrong; Laura Hilliard Armstrong; and Daniel Ross Schaan. He is also survived by his loving step-children Jennifer George Kuebler and husband, Mark; John Harris Masterson and wife, Catherine; Cecel Haden Masterson; and William Douglas Masterson and wife, Shelly; as well as their children Philip, Mark, Andrew, and Matthew Kuebler; Harris, Haden, and Wills Masterson; David and Laura Briner; John Hunter, Lexie, and Holden Masterson; and Samantha Proudfoot. He also leaves behind beloved friends, including Catalina Salazar, whose friendship he cherished for 45 year, and Milagro Cisneros, for 20 years.
Honored to serve as pallbearers during this morning’s services are Charles D. Armstrong, Philip P. Armstrong, Dale F. Dorn, C. Haden Masterson, J. Harris Masterson, W. Douglas Masterson, Charles E. Neuhaus, and Daniel R. Schaan. Ushers will be William J. Clark, John O. Hastings, Mark E. Kuebler, Richard W. Neff, Joseph R. Neuhaus, Jr., and David D. Welsh. Serving as honorary pallbearers are P. Gervais Bell, Joseph C. Brown, Charles Callery, John W. Elder, S. Field Emerson, David Fitch, William G. Kinney, William R. Lummis, Gray H. Muzzy, Warren B. Pond, L. Davidson Smyth, Anderson Todd, David M. Underwood, and Richard W. Weekley.
The funeral service is to be conducted at ten o'clock this morning, Friday, the 26th of April, at Christ Church Cathedral, 1117 Texas Avenue in Houston, where the Very Rev. Barkley S. Thompson, Dean, and the Rev. Edward L. Stein, Canon Precentor, are to officiate.
The interment is to immediately follow, via an escorted cortege, at Glenwood Cemetery in Houston, where friends are invited to join the family for the committal service and the rendering of military honors. Afterwards, the family is to greet friends during a reception to be held at a venue announced at the services.
