1929-2015
Phyllis Evans passed away peacefully at her home in Houston, Texas on December 3, 2015,
surrounded by her family. She was born October 24, 1929 in Ft. Smith, Arkansas to Doris and
Monte Horn.
Although having later lived in east Texas, she settled in Conway, Arkansas as a child where
she attended high school and graduated from Hendrix College. She lettered four years for the
varsity tennis team, was a physical education and history major, was selected to the
Cardinal Key National Honor Society, and was listed in Who’s Who in American Colleges and
Universities. Graduating with honors in the spring of 1959, she taught high school Physical
Education and History in Warren, Arkansas. Her proudest teaching memory was helping returning
Veterans attain their high school degrees in night school after returning from World War II. Meeting
the love of her life, Sam Evans, on the tennis courts at Hendrix, they were the first to be married in
the new chapel on campus on December 30, 1951. Marrying a fledgling geophysicist meant life on
the road which included thirty-seven towns until settling in Midland, Texas. After a short move to
Oklahoma City, the family settled in Houston, Texas in 1967.
Phyllis was a member of the Houston Racquet Club where she continued her love of tennis.
She was an avid golfer and loved to hunt. The only thing she loved more was being with her family,
whether hosting them in her home or at a favorite restaurant in town.
Phyllis is survived by her husband of sixty-four years, her daughter Sami Mossbarger and
husband Ron, grandchildren Danielle Vogl and Jenna Mossbarger, son Philip Evans and wife Beth,
and grandchildren Emily and Matthew Evans. She is predeceased by her parents and numerous
aunts and uncles.
A celebration of life will be held at Memorial Oaks Funeral Home at 13001 Katy Freeway,
Houston, Texas on Wednesday, December 9th at 12:30 in the afternoon.
The family wishes to extend their thanks to the PALS, nurses, and staff at Belmont Village
Hunter’s Creek. Their loving care along with that of Houston Hospice helped guide and ease the
transition from life on earth to eternal life with our Lord.
