Phyllis Jean Walters was born in Gary, Indiana on October 24, 1928, to William and Rose Hull. She was welcomed into heaven on May 7, 2024. Phyllis graduated from Hot Springs Arkansas’ only High School in May 1947 and married her high school sweetheart, Norman Walters, in 1948.
Their daughter, Norma Jean, was born in 1949. From Hot Springs, they moved to Little Rock, Arkansas in 1954 and then to Oklahoma City in 1957. In 1963, they moved to Houston, Texas. In 1977, Jim Atkins married Norma Jean to complete their family.
Phyllis was raised in the Presbyterian Church. In 1962, Rev. Nathan Price welcomed her into the Church of the Nazarene. She remained a loyal Nazarene for over 60 years. In what was Spring Branch Church of the Nazarene and later became Living Word Church, Phyllis held many volunteer positions. In addition to helping Norman establish and lead the Outreach Sunday School class, she actively pursued the ministry of contacting people who visited the church or those who had been absent. She wanted people to know that they were welcomed, loved and missed. She enjoyed writing letters to those who were unable to attend regular services. No job was too small if it involved bringing people to church.
Phyllis is survived by Norman, her husband of 76 years, her daughter, Norma Jean, and son-in-law Jim. One cousin, Phyllis Ann Mulligan, and husband George.
The family would like to thank all of those who cared for her during her courageous battle with stomach cancer. The journey was difficult, but her medical care was good. Additionally, the extensive assistance with her care as well as the visits, calls, and cards from the Outreach Class and well beyond which lifted Phyllis’ spirits and those of the whole family are appreciated more than words can express.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions to the Outreach Class Fund of Living Word Church, 16607 Clay Rd., Houston, TX 77084
