October 1, 1944 – October 9, 2026
Joseph Rao Tran, 82, of Tomball, Texas, was called home to God on October 9, 2026, surrounded by his wife, children, and grandchildren.
Rao was born on October 1, 1944, in Bùi Chu, Vietnam, third oldest and the eldest son of seven children. He attended Cao Thắng High School in Saigon before entering Thủ Đức Military School as a member of Class 18. He went on to serve in the Kiến Tường and Định Tường Military Sectors, eventually attaining the rank of Captain. His final military assignment was Deputy Battalion Commander, stationed on Phú Quốc Island.
In 1975, as the Vietnam War came to an end, Rao orchestrated the evacuation of his own family, his sister's children, several of his brothers and their families. They eventually boarded U.S. Navy ships and began their journey to a new life in America. The family ultimately settled in Columbus, Ohio, where they faced the challenges of starting over in a country far from everything they had known.
Rao's efforts to help his family didn't end with their arrival in America. In the years that followed, he continued helping relatives navigate immigration to the United States through sponsoring family members, assisting with paperwork and helping them get settled. His selfless efforts helped make possible the lives that generations of his extended family have built here.
Rao was a hardworking, resilient and stoic man who always put his wife and family first, making sure they always had what they needed. At mealtimes, he would wait until everyone else had been served before sitting down to eat. It was a small gesture, but one that said so much about him. Taking care of his family wasn't something he talked about. It was simply what he did.
Rao was a devout Catholic whose faith inspired and guided every aspect of his life. Heartfelt devotion to the Holy Trinity—Father, Son, and Holy Spirit—was at the core of who he was, alongside a lifelong love and reverence for the Blessed Virgin Mary. His unwavering faith in God was reflected in a life of generosity and devotion to the Church. Through sponsoring numerous nuns, deacons, and priests, he helped nurture the callings of those devoted to serving God and His people. Rao’s selfless generosity and steadfast faith leaving a lasting spiritual legacy, exemplifying a life guided by faith, love, and service.
Rao later made his home in Tomball, Texas. Through all the changes in his life, from his years in Vietnam and military service to raising a family and helping relatives establish themselves in the United States, his priorities remained much the same. Family first, always.
Rao’s final wish was for everyone to love and support one another. He hoped that everyone would live happily and in harmony. Above all, he wished for his legacy of faith, love, and generosity to continue for generations to come.
Rao is survived by his beloved wife of 59 years, Cung Ngoc Tran; his eldest son, Hai Minh Tran, his wife, Lyna Vy Tran, and their children; his daughter, Cindy Thuy Tran, her husband, Khoa Nguyen, and their children; his middle son, John Tuan Tran, his wife Emily Tran, and their children; and his youngest son, Joe Quoc Tran, and his children; his brothers, Giang Tran of Columbus, Ohio, Chinh Tran of Cleveland, Ohio, and Mai Tran of Boston, Massachusetts; and his Goddaughters, Sister Hong Loan, Sister Pham Hong, and Giau Truong.
