“The brightest lights often burn out too soon”.
Raul Hermes was a man defined by selflessness, faith, and an unshakable commitment to doing what was right. He had a rare ability to find joy even in pain and believed deeply that every challenge carried a lesson from God. A lifelong student in both knowledge and character, Raul lived with humility, discipline, and quiet strength.
Raul was born in Aguascalientes, Mexico, into a family of eight—his mother and seven sisters. He spent the first sixteen years of his life there, growing up surrounded by strong women who helped shape the man he would become. In the absence of a father figure, Raul naturally stepped into that role himself. From a young age, he felt responsible for protecting, guiding, and providing for his sisters. He walked some of them down the aisle, helped whenever money was needed, and was always the one called when something needed fixing. Whether or not he already knew how to do something never mattered; Raul would always figure it out.
As a boy, he could often be found playing baseball, boxing, or sketching and drawing after attending the art institute. He was observant, detail-oriented, and disciplined. He took pride in being orderly and meticulous with his work and his belongings. One of his favorite sayings captured his philosophy perfectly: “Do things right the first time, because the lazy person has to do it twice.” That mindset guided not only his work, but his entire life.
Raul was also a devoted servant of the Lord. His faith was not something he spoke loudly about, but something he lived every day. He gave generously of his time, energy, and resources without ever seeking recognition or praise. Whether helping someone in need, serving his church, or quietly supporting others, Raul believed true service was done for God alone. His kindness was intentional, his generosity sincere, and his humility unwavering.
Through his faith, Raul also found a way to serve through music. He had an innate musical ability to play multiple instruments and highly enjoyed playing the guitar. He was a founding member of the popular Christian band Isla De Patmos, where he was the band’s first lead bassist. He also composed and sang the song “Espera En El”. Music was another form of worship for him—a way to glorify God and reach others without words. His talent, dedication, and heart for ministry left a lasting impact on those he played alongside and those who listened.
In November of 2004, Raul met the love of his life, Andrea, thanks to a bet. His gym friends told him he wouldn’t be able to take her out because she was eight inches taller than him—and even put $500 on it. Raul, of course, proved them wrong. By November of 2005, he had won the bet and, more importantly, he and Andrea welcomed their one and only child, their son Andre Skylar, who immediately became the center of Raul’s world. Family always came first for Raul. He worked hard and never spent much on himself, preferring to make sure his wife and son had everything they needed. Even though he’d complain and say he didn’t want gifts—and might even get a little mad when they bought him something—he loved every single one. He took care of those gifts like they were priceless, not because of what they were, but because of the love behind them.
Education and learning were cornerstones of Raul’s life. Despite having very limited financial support, he put himself through community college and completed every trade school program available to him. He was an avid reader and constantly sought deeper understanding, especially in electronics and HVAC systems. His passion for learning never faded—he continued attending courses year after year, eventually even giving lectures himself. To Raul, knowledge was a responsibility meant to be shared.
He loved cycling and proudly completed the MS150 seven times, a testament to his determination and endurance. He enjoyed watching baseball and was a devoted Houston Astros fan, and when football season came around, he never missed a chance to cheer on his Pittsburgh Steelers. Raul also loved spending time with friends, and, of course, playing bass guitar.
Travel was another thing he truly enjoyed. He especially loved visiting Cancun, Mexico, and exploring different parts of Colombia, where he spent a lot of time with his sister-in-law and his niece, making memories, and learning about his beloved wife's culture.
Above all else, Raul Hermes will be remembered as a faithful servant of God, a devoted son, a protective brother, a loving husband, a proud father, and a man of unwavering integrity. His generosity, work ethic, curiosity, faith, and quiet strength left a lasting impact on everyone who knew him. His legacy lives on through the family he loved so deeply, the lives he served without recognition, and the faith he lived out daily.
He is survived by his Son, Andre Skylar, his beautiful Wife, Andrea, his Mother, Amparo, and his Seven Sisters; Elizabeth, Blanca, Rocio, Silvia, Alma, Olga, and Veronica, and his Half-Brother, Oscar.
